Dominic Sanderson

Dominic Sanderson – Editor

I'm an ardent music lover with over three years of experience specialising in books on music. I am also an independent musician.

Overview

I have worked for Sonicbond Publishing as an editor for nearly three and a half years now, and I have a proven track record of consistently ensuring high-quality publications, whether for the books in our flagship 'On Track' series or for standalone books.

With each author, I aim to provide a clear step-by-step service that covers every side of the publishing process: from the initial idea to the finished work, honing and shaping the structure and content but still retaining the author's tone and style. I always encourage an author to dig deeper into a topic, ensuring that no stone is left unturned and enabling readers to get the most out of the book. When I worked on historian Matthew Restall's 'Ghosts' book – focusing on the Post-Pop approaches of David Sylvian, Mark Hollis and Kate Bush – the author valued such methods:

"Your comments were truly excellent. I cannot overstate how grateful I am to have someone with your knowledge and editing skills reading the book. In all cases, you helped make the book better. In some cases, your comments prompted thoughts and further reading that allowed me to make improvements in multiple places. Thank you so much."

As well as aiding the development of the book, I have a keen eye as a proofer, ironing out grammatical errors as well as making sure that the book consistently uses the same spelling, punctuation, formatting, etc. This extends to design errors when checking through the paged PDF, spotting stray indents and line breaks and making sure the correct font and font styles are being used.

As a musician myself, I bring an unwavering passion for music alongside my skills as an editor. Having completed a music degree, I have a good grasp of music theory and a well-rounded knowledge of music history, with Progressive Rock being my strongest subject. Above all, fervour and creative flair win the day.

Overall, I refuse to cut corners, making sure that at every stage the book is as clear, professional and informative as possible.

Work experience

Sonicbond Publishing

Apr, 2023 — Present
My main task is developmental editing, copy editing and proofreading music books on artists and bands, providing detailed feedback that aims to improve the flow, style and content of the writing, as well as fixing grammar and formatting errors. Furthermore, I put together the colour sections, compose social media posts, design press release sheets, provide admin support for the website and format/create ebooks using Vellum. I also commission new books for the company, working with authors to develop and acquire new titles from concept through to publication.
