Experienced editor, copy editor and proofreader of crime fiction, thrillers, literary fiction and creative nonfiction.
I am an experienced editor of crime novels and literary fiction. I have worked as a developmental editor on crime novels including the award-winning SEALED and EXIT MANAGEMENT by Naomi Booth, and Laura Ellen Joyce’s THE MUSEUM OF ATHEISM. I worked as a developmental editor on Helen Jukes's bestselling creative nonfiction book A HONEYBEE HEART HAS FIVE OPENINGS. I have also worked freelance for clients including newspapers, magazines, university research projects, and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
My debut novel, DEAF AT SPIRAL PARK was published in 2013, and I have had short fiction and critical writing published in online journals. My short story “Sitcom” was chosen for BEST BRITISH SHORT STORIES 2019 (Salt). I have worked as a Lecturer in Literature and Creative Writing, supervising university students working on literary and genre fiction. I hold a doctorate in contemporary fiction.
I really enjoy working with first-time authors, and I understand how to support a writer at every stage of their journey. As a writer, I understand the process from an authorial perspective as well as an editorial one, and I am sensitive to the emotional aspect of writing and editing. I help writers to polish their stories without imposing my own tastes on their work. I enjoy working with authors over the course of their careers and supporting them to develop their voice and giving them skills and knowledge that will be useful throughout their career.
I taught literature and creative writing to final year students at York St John University. I worked with students on their fiction and poetry writing, led workshops and provided feedback.
I have been providing freelance editorial and transcription services since 2012. In that time, I have worked for national newspapers and magazines, on research projects and papers for several universities and on National Lottery funded heritage projects.
My debut novel, 'Deaf at Spiral Park' was published by Salt. I have had short fiction published in literary journals. My short story “Sitcom” was chosen for 'Best British Short Stories 2019' (Salt) edited by Nicholas Royle. My critical work has appeared in academic journals and edited collections.
