Award-winning editor with 25+ years of experience editing novels, non-fiction books, and journalism.
Overview
I'm an award-winning editor with 25+ years of experience editing novels, non-fiction books, and journalism for New York magazine, New York Times, and others. I'm a two-time James Beard award winner and a National Magazine Award nominee specializing in literary fiction, arts, culture, food, humor, travel, and more. As both an editor who has worked with hundreds of writers and a writer who has collaborated with many editors, I've been on both sides of the desk. I appreciate the value of an edit that is thorough and exacting but also respectful of an author's voice and vision. I've edited everyone from bestselling authors to student writers for whom English is a second language. You can count on me to give your work the line-by-line attention it deserves as well as "big picture" advice about character development, structure, pacing, tone, and other critical elements of storytelling.
Founder and editor of Bedford + Bowery, a New York magazine site covering arts and culture in NYC. Also edited The Local East Village, a New York Times site covering local news in downtown NYC. I edited hundreds of student writers and and taught graduate-level classes in local journalism and food/fashion writing.

Acquired books in a variety of genres, including satirical fiction (Glen Duncan's Death of an Ordinary Man and I, Lucifer), history (Winston Groom's 1942), nature/popular culture (Andrew Blechman's Pigeons), literary fiction (Matthew McIntosh's Well) and screenplays (Todd Haynes's Far From Heaven).
I hired Daniel because his background and credentials fit the profile I was seeking in an editing partner for my first project through Reedsy. He offered sound, practical advice at a reasonable cost and on time. I hope to work with him on my next project.

Dan was professional and very thorough. Even before I selected him he offered a sample of his editing style based on my writing samples. This gave me a sense for his style and indeed he continued with that same approach as he edited the full manuscript. Once he began I could tell he made a poi...
Daniel provided solid notes that helped me refine my ideas, as well as line-by-line edits that helped me refine my prose. He was also very timely and accommodating!

Daniel was a pleasure to work with. He understood the assignment and went above and beyond. Besides that he gave me the confidence that my work was worth something which is invaluable. I'd work with him again in a heartbeat.

Daniel Maurer,
What a guy. In addition to the developmental edit, he was generous with copy edits and mechanical tips. My manuscript is bit crazy and frequently beyond the pale. Daniel was tolerant of the weirdness and unfashionable political content. He even thought some of the jokes were fu...
