Daniel Maurer

Daniel Maurer – Editor

Award-winning editor with 25+ years of experience editing novels, non-fiction books, and journalism.

Overview

I'm an award-winning editor with 25+ years of experience editing novels, non-fiction books, and journalism for New York magazine, New York Times, and others. I'm a two-time James Beard award winner and a National Magazine Award nominee specializing in literary fiction, arts, culture, food, humor, travel, and more.

As both an editor who has worked with hundreds of writers and a writer who has collaborated with many editors, I've been on both sides of the desk. I appreciate the value of an edit that is thorough and exacting but also respectful of an author's voice and vision. I've edited everyone from bestselling authors to student writers for whom English is a second language. You can count on me to give your work the line-by-line attention it deserves as well as "big picture" advice about character development, structure, pacing, tone, and other critical elements of storytelling.

Daniel was thoughtful and attentive from the initial quote request (he read through all of my sample material and gave feedback). It felt like I had someone who was personally interested in my work involved. He had an intuitive understanding of where I was coming from and a clear vision of what my work could be. The combination of his writing knowledge and his knowledge of the market really hel...

I've had mixed experiences with editors before but, from the start, there was an excitement about the project in Daniel's pitch that got him the job, and that was more than fulfilled in what he delivered. While I don't agree with all of his suggestions, all of them were well argued, and well thought out, all to tighten up the manuscript and push the story up a couple of levels of quality to ge...

Daniel 100% ‘got’ my project from the jump. Given how subjective humor can be, he offered comprehensive and effective development notes, as well as insightful third party references to guide the material. He also gave some useful tips on getting the project out into the market. Responsive and proactive, I will certainly be using his services on future projects.
