Amelia Gilliland

Amelia Gilliland – Editor

Book editor with 20 years’ experience in publishing helping authors find the clearest, strongest version of their work.

Overview

I’m a book editor with twenty years of experience helping writers shape, polish, and strengthen their work.

Over the course of my career, I’ve worked in-house, as a freelancer, and alongside publishers, universities, professional associations, and self-publishing authors. I’ve edited fiction, non-fiction, memoir, essays, professional writing, and more than a few manuscripts that arrived with a note along the lines of, “I’m not sure if this is anything yet.” Those are often the most fun.

My job is to help you see your work more clearly. Sometimes that means looking at the big picture: structure, pacing, character, argument, voice, or what the book is really trying to become. Sometimes it means getting into the sentence-level details: clarity, flow, grammar, consistency, and style. And sometimes it means offering honest, thoughtful feedback so you can decide what the next stage of the project should be.

I specialize in developmental editing, copy editing, proofreading, and manuscript evaluations. I’m careful, candid, and kind in my approach because I know how much work it takes to write a book, and how vulnerable it can feel to hand it to someone else.

Whether you’re preparing to self-publish, revising a draft, or trying to figure out what your manuscript needs next, I’d be happy to help.
