Rachel Sargent

Rachel Sargent – Editor

Experienced developmental editor of award-winning fiction and nonfiction with seven years of big five publishing experience.

Overview

I'm an editor at Ecco, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers with seven years of publishing experience. I've worked with both debut and established authors and specialize in literary/upmarket fiction and narrative/big idea nonfiction. Authors I've worked with have won awards like the Nautilus Book Award, the William Saroyan Prize, the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize, the American Society of Journalists and Authors Award for Best Biography/History, and more, and have been nominated for the Pen/Faulkner Award, Lamda Literary Award, and the Plutarch Award for Best Biography, among others. I've also been a reader for Adroit Journal and Sonora Review and hold an M.Phil. in Creative Writing from Trinity College Dublin.

While developmental, structural, and line edits are my focus, I love working with writers at any stage of the process, whether that's outlining or agent querying. I believe editing can be an incredibly rewarding collaborative process and am eager to help writers improve their manuscripts.

Work experience

HarperCollins

Mar, 2024 — Present
I oversee a list of titles through every stage of publishing, from acquisition to publication and beyond. I meet regularly with agents, authors, and scouts and track market trends. I evaluate submissions and work closely with authors on developmental and line edits to sharpen structure, voice, and market positioning. I also serve as each book's in-house champion, partnering with design, marketing, publicity, and sales to build cover concepts, positioning copy, and launch strategies.
