Weekly Contest #376
CW: Violence, murder, blood, gore Charlie felt the cold metal of the gun in his hand. “You know how to use that thing?” asked Joel, one hand on the steering wheel. “Sure,” Charlie said, doing his best to sound confident. “Of course he knows how to use it,” said Knox from the front seat. “We got a real killer back there.” Knox let out a harsh cackle and removed a cigarette from the pack in his hand. The truth was Charlie had never shot a gun before. As a young boy, his father would take him deer hunting, but Charlie had no interest in shooti...
Weekly Contest #364
The first thought Phillip Emerson had upon waking in bed was one of uncertainty. He was accustomed to beginning his day inside unfamiliar rooms, the quiet hum of the air conditioner his only companion. He was a businessman and with this vocation came travel—and with travel came an endless stream of hotel rooms. From Antwerp to Zanzibar, Phillip had delighted in some of finest lodgings this world had to offer. He was wealthy, of course, a fact that was not lost on the bellhops and chambermaids who waited on Phillip hand and foot. He enjoyed t...
Weekly Contest #344
It’s a little after seven in the morning when the sun begins to peek over the eastern skyline. Beams of light are cast across the lush forest floor, coaxing creatures big and small out of their nighttime dwellings. High above, a red-tailed hawk returns to its nest following an early morning hunt. The hawk floats effortlessly above the trees, which stand tall and proud like green skyscrapers. As the bird approaches its destination, a pang of fear registers inside its tiny brain. Several feet below the bird’s nest is an unknown predator, rocki...
Weekly Contest #337
The first time James could remember it happening was when he was six-years-old. It was several weeks before Christmas and he sat in the living room with his mother as she wrapped presents on the floor. A small record player was the source of Bing Crosby’s soothing voice. The singer was dreaming of a white Christmas and James was dreaming about all the toys he would find under the tree come Christmas morning. The sweet aroma of sugar cookies floated into the room as the treats baked in the kitchen. James watched as his mom deftly wrapped each...
Weekly Contest #333
The banquet hall was abuzz with activity. Edmund squinted his eyes and looked down the long oak table, but had difficulty locating the end of it. Hundreds of candles flickered inside the room like fireflies. There was not a single empty chair to be found. To dine inside this room—at the invitation of the King—was the highest honor one could receive. Any man declining that invitation was not likely to stay in the good graces of His Majesty. Or keep his head. Edmund flinched as the double doors to his right flung open with a deafening crack. A...
Weekly Contest #327
“I told you we were close, Bobby! Patience is a virtue, my friend.” The old man anxiously rubbed at the gray stubble on his chin. He lived for these moments—when a solution to a confounding problem suddenly revealed itself. He had spent most of his adult life chasing this feeling. The man sipped from his coffee mug gloatingly and prepared to make his move. He felt a sudden pang of melancholy knowing that his work was nearly finished. “Let’s get on with it then.” He worked slowly, his hands shaking more than usual. His doctor had lectured...
Weekly Contest #321
To those in attendance, the scene inside Viewing Room #3 appeared routine and unremarkable. Evenly spaced rows of chairs decorated the pristine carpet. Floral decorations of all size and color covered the walls like a radiant jungle. The small space was packed with mourners—a testament to the man who laid inside the casket at the front of the room. But despite its ordinary appearance, there was something amiss about this particular occasion. A man stood in the back of the room, keeping a close eye on the comings and goings. You would be forg...
Weekly Contest #318
“Son of a bitch!” The car door slammed. I had hoped we could get out of the parking lot before the expletives started flying, but I hadn’t even started the car yet. “Lake Athabasca! Who the hell knows anything about Lake Athabasca?” I briefly considered mentioning that at least one person that night knew about Lake Athabasca, but now was not the time for that particular rejoinder. Sunday night was trivia night at The Thirsty Turtle, a local watering hole favored by thirtysomethings who no longer had the tolerance for the loud bars out th...
Weekly Contest #314
It was the hottest day of the year. The meteorologist had warned that the temperature would hit 104 degrees by the afternoon. He used words like “unprecedented” and “extremely dangerous.” It was the kind of day people spent lying by the pool or lounging in the air conditioning. I lay broken and bruised inside an empty house. I was alone. And I was roasting alive. The house was empty because the previous family had moved out and put it up for sale. I’m a Real Estate Agent. Not a particularly good one, but that’s how I found myself in the ho...
