Weekly Contest #372
Content Warning: This story contains themes of stalking, paranoia, and brief violence. I don’t see him at first. For a few seconds, all I can make out through the living room window is the gray face of the office building across the street, row after row of glass reflecting the late-afternoon sky. The sun has already slipped behind the buildings to the west, leaving everything washed in that strange colorless light that comes just before evening. People move behind some of the windows, little silhouettes passing from desk to desk, but none ...
Weekly Contest #365
Fen had seen three hangings before this one and he had not wept at any of them. He was ten years old and he had lived his whole life in the Caldwell orphanage on Marten Street and he understood perfectly well what a person had to do to end up on a scaffold. You had to do something bad enough that even the magistrate, who was not known for his conscience, could not look away from it. That was not easy. Fen had seen men walk free from the magistrate's court for things that would have turned your stomach and he had learned early that the law be...
Weekly Contest #364
I had been planning the tea party for longer than Eleanor knew. I sent the invitations on her notepaper, which she had told me I was welcome to use anytime. I chose the guests with care. Mrs. Alderton, who had not kept a secret since childhood. The Pembury sisters, who went everywhere together and talked constantly and were therefore worth three ordinary women. Mrs. Crane from the charitable society, who could not witness anything without making it into a slightly more dramatic story than what had actually occurred. Six women in total, every...
Weekly Contest #363
I think most people like fireworks. They are big and loud and beautiful, the kind of thing that makes the whole sky feel like it is putting on a show just for you. I have never been able to feel that way about them. Even as a kid I flinched at the sound, and somehow that flinch never grew out of me the way it was supposed to. I know children are allowed to be scared of loud noises, but there is something embarrassing about still being scared of them as an adult, about still hearing a firework and thinking, for half a second, that it was a gu...
Weekly Contest #361
Content warning: illness and end-of-life themes. My dear old friend, I’m sorry I’m writing instead of calling. I know, I know. Very dramatic of me. Also very old-fashioned. And, considering I have never been especially good at writing letters, slightly reckless. You’d have laughed at the number of times I started this and crossed out the first line. Apparently there is no graceful way to begin a letter like this. I tried “How are you?” but that felt rude, since I’m not exactly leaving room for you to answer. I tried “I hope you’re well,” ...
Weekly Contest #357
Content warning: Animal death, betrayal by a parental figure, and themes of emotional manipulation. Story is told from the innocent, childlike perspective of the victim. The Human She Called Dad Me and dad stand at the very top of the hill, the tallest one near the city, and down below everybody is happy. I can hear the bells from up here. They are the big temple ones that only ring on special days, and they are all going at the same time. Under the bells there are people, so many people, out in the streets and up on the roofs and squished ...
Weekly Contest #355
INMATE FOUND DEAD IN CELL: Ellis Rucker, 28, found unresponsive in his cell at Kessler Correctional early Thursday. Prison officials say foul play has not been ruled out. Clara read it twice. Then she set her phone face-down on the nightstand and lay there staring at the ceiling for a long time, listening to nothing at all until the silence became unbearable and she got up. These days it feels like she just wants to sleep forever. There were arrangements to make. The funeral home was called Hendricks & Sons. It was beige and carpeted and ...
