“Bueno, el café es una de las cosas más importantes para los puertorriqueños y el mayor parte del caribe y Suramérica.” Damn it; I forgot the lecture was going to be in Spanish. Our teacher was in the front preparing coffee - an espresso pot here, a French press there, ground up instant coffee, one of those vessels for Japanese preparation. The name of it is escaping me; I will just wait until she tells the class. Here’s the thing: I don’t really drink coffee. I was born with an extra wire, to burn, I guess. But the teacher? She drinks abou...

The burlap sack over my head obscured my vision. Light in the room was minimal, at best, but I could still see the head sorceress standing beside The Book of Offerings on the podium in the center. The space smelled of wax and books. The head sorceress was hooded so only her crimson lips were visible and she positioned herself to be backlit by the moon and ebbing flames on thin candles. All this cloak and dagger, an unnecessary but traditional practice, reflected the worst of our order, hidden even within our mostly magical world. Where more ...

An unexpected snow storm with infamous southern hail grounded all flights out of Atlanta for the second day in a row. The typically crowded airport was now extended beyond its maximum capacity by thousands of passengers and their luggage. Miranda waited impatiently in line outside the restroom as a barrage of other travelers pushed past with their suitcases and coats. She joined the queue almost thirty minutes prior and there were still at least a dozen women and girls ahead of her, all anxiously checking their phones and looking down either...

“Hey, does anyone have a three-letter word for –”“Nobody is going to help you with your puzzles, Donnie. We are not in the mood.”“You all are never interested. You just spend all day at each other’s throats.”“That’s what brothers do. You wouldn’t know, you only had a sister.”“You two are not, in fact, brothers.”“Well, we are close enough to be brothers. Anyways, what was I saying?”“Well, Michael, you said Harvey owed you an apology and the last thing Harvey said was that he does not understand what he has done wrong.”“Really, Harv, you don’t...

It was a difficult decision, best made away from prying eyes. The discussion had lasted for an hour to this point, and they were running out of time. People passed the room unaware. Some passersby would say, plainly, they didn’t care. Others would’ve offered unsolicited opinions given the chance - or vicious remarks - to cut down the confidence of the discussants therein. The building was full of true aficionados - or, at least, people working their way there.“Don’t put your hands on hips.”“Then, don’t cross your arms. It means you’re not op...

“Aren’t you tired of hiding out here, huddled in the lodge when we should be outdoors? It is like this every time they pass through our lands,” he growled, slamming his bowl onto the counter. “Don’t walk for too long, don’t take an afternoon family stroll. When you do, they’ll swoop in with land deeds, estate documents, and false testimony – anything they can levy against you from their legal system. Just you wait and see – they will create a subclass of us to serve their greed.” A few others seated at the table offered gruff grunts of agree...
