I've been staring into the soft white glow of the nearly empty fridge for probably five minutes, hoping I’ll find something substantial to eat. It’s never worked for me before, but you never know: this could be the one time that the magical refrigerator fairy appears and adds something delicious without any effort on my part. My stomach grumbles, and I squeeze my eyes tight, making a wish. When my eyes open, nothing in the sparse fridge is different: beers, white wine, a hunk of cheese, pickles, condiments, and definitely expired baking soda...
