Uncharted

Sophia had been walking in the snow for hours, and her feet were numb even through the worn fur-lined boots. The blizzard had come out of nowhere, and she'd been caught unprepared. She knew she should have gathered more supplies earlier in the last town she passed through, but already planned to make it into the next town before nightfall. Her pace hadn’t been swift enough though. Then again, probably any pace she'd set wouldn’t have been enough to get out of the oncoming storm. The town she expected to be in was still a couple miles out. B...

Not So Happy Engagement Year

Weekly Contest #126

If you are looking for a happy New Years story, this isn't the story for you :) `````````````----------------------------------------------------- It was the eighth time the phone had rung since he woke up this morning and every time it rang, he felt himself closer to curling up in a ball and crying. Dishes piled in the sink, stacked almost as tall as he was. Large heaps of laundry accumulated in various parts of his dingy apartment, no rhyme or reason to their placements. You could argue a severe case of depression, but it was normal life...

The Art of Fire

Weekly Contest #108

Fury seared deep in Brooklynn’s veins, building with every second that passed. The fleeting minutes burned her anger higher, much like the engulfing flames over her beloved house in front of her. For the briefest millisecond she felt a pang of guilt, but squashed it immediately. This was not her fault; she had done everything right for years. Ten years of what she thought was bliss, broken and wasted in the blink of an eye. How did it come to this? She clutched her squirming Pekingese, Khali, closer to her chest as the little dog snorted ...

Liars Gonna Lie

Weekly Contest #107

"You're lying, you have to be lying right now." The disbelief in Hara's voice is unmistakable. The shrillness in pitch could break glass if she went any higher. Her face is tightly pinched and she is standing - looming, really - over her younger brother. The rest of the family are sitting in the small living room, three pairs of eyes staring intently at the scrawny man who was slouching so deeply under the disapproving glare of his sister that he was nearly inside the couch cushions. "I wish I was." Cody’s voice is weak but steady. He re...

Undead Rejection

Weekly Contest #60

The candle burning in the middle of the small table had about an hour's worth of wick left, but Alyssa was only vaguely aware of the flickering light. Her attention mainly focused on the man sitting across from her and the belly laugh currently overtaking his entire body. Tristan was a jokester, always laughing at his own jokes. She loved him with all her being. This man had been by her side through thick and thin, showered her with all his affection and endless amounts of corny jokes. She never had to worry or have any doubts that he lov...

The Man in the Woods

Weekly Contest #16

She could feel him out there. No, she couldn't see him, but he was out there in the woods, watching. Standing out on her porch Macy stared out into those woods, holding her mug of tea tight in her hands. She was scanning the area where the trees lined up almost perfectly along her back-property line, searching for any movement, but it seemed even the insects were hiding tonight. This had been the same routine for five years now, except for the absence of the bugs, that was new. Five long, long years. At first it had started out with the ha...

When Souls Meet

Weekly Contest #16

The ballroom was huge. Hannah had never been in a ballroom before, but from all the historical romances she constantly read this was definitely bigger than she had pictured and far more elegant than her imagination could conjure up. The chandelier itself was probably bigger than her eight hundred square footage apartment! Luckily, Hannah’s half-face lace mask protected her from having to squint when she looked up to see the darn thing, there was no way her friends were going to believe how huge the hanging glass ornament was. The wood floors...
