Weekly Contest #375
The faces are what gave it away I was dreaming. They all wore the same expression. A flat smile with a blank stare. Every so often a pair eyes would flash in my direction and then away. But never all at the same time. That would give it away too quickly. There were other signs I was asleep. The colours shining from the lights onto the dancefloor were too vibrant. Too saturated for reality. Illuminated fuchsia. Bright blue. Glowing amber. It gave the space an unsettling and unearthly radiance. The music also, I realised, was a giveaway. The...
Weekly Contest #321
Today was a good day. Today was a really, really fucking good, good day. A new client came into the salon this morning. Pretty young thing. Thick hair to her waist. The hair was black. Coal black. But unlike coal it was shiny, healthy, glimmering underneath the lights. She sat down in the chair and swivelled to face the mirror. “I’m looking for a drastic change,” she told Mark, looking up to his reflection. “A girlfriend suggested a bob to me a few months back and it’s taken all that time to work up the courage to get it done but I’ve mad...

Case ID: #000033 ______ 07/02 15:40 Hi there! This is an automated email confirming your enquiry “I was meant to order the new Bahama sunrise tea mix but got confused and realised I should’ve ordered the Texan coffee tisane. sorry. It’s meant to be a gift and I need it in 7 days so i’d really appreciate a swap of tea rather than a refund. I only ordered it this morning thanks. And is it possible to change out the matching tea set for the texan one too? With matching tea cosy of course. My partner is obsessed with the taste of coffee but w...
Weekly Contest #209
Jangling keys. Loaded bags. Thudding doors. Seatbelts on. Handbrake off and the car’s steady acceleration out of the driveway. The engine purred as we drifted down the street. “We’ll meet your mum and sister on the other side of the border. In Adelaide, okay?” my father said, turning his head to look at me in the seat behind. “And we’ll stop at the bakery when we reach Ballarat. You can get anything you want.” I replied with a grunt. The promise for sweets was a cushion, meant to soften the blow of keeping me in the back seat. I was stil...
Weekly Contest #204
In a pearlescent white room with walls spanning the height of three storeys, Jackson Jones took his seat alongside nine other trainees. Of course, Jackson Jones wasn't his real name but the one assigned to him for his new job as a Time Correspondent. The trainees were being inducted into the Agency of Time Travel, an inter-governmental organisation established in 2582 with very limited resources and extremely strict restrictions around travelling through time. Agent Chiu, their supervisor, paced the area in front of their desks. “Time trave...
Weekly Contest #179
It was a balmy, summer night on the island. A chorus of insects chirped loudly underneath a cloudless, starry sky. The prospect of a new year had brought an air of excitement and nervousness into the house. In a warm room lively with laughter, William poured three more glasses of wine. “Willy, not another!” Abby, his wife, hugged him from behind and rested her head on his shoulder. He smiled and kissed her, spilling wine onto the table as he did so. “It’s a celebration, honey. A tribute to a new year as parents.” He set the bottle on the...

It was approaching 2am when Lexi made the discovery that would fracture the world. She skulled the rest of her black coffee and sat the paper cup down on the smooth, white table. She was at the university working on her PhD thesis. The research involved creating controlled, miniature black holes in a Vacuity Machine and then testing its potential for hyper-space travel. It was mostly hypothetical research. Lexi ran the formulas through the Vacuity Machine over and over again. She was analysing the results of her most recent trial, bleary-ey...
