Stratigraphy August 8th It’s funny—in some ways, an archaeological excavation is just reading a story in reverse. That’s all stratigraphy is, really. The top of the soil is the end of the story, and the bottom is the beginning. And as we are digging up the past, the layer that we start with is the layer that the grave ends with. By removing each one, we travel back in time, further and further, until we finally reach the bottom. Until we reach the start. I think I like that.Anyway, my plane leaves in three hours and I still can’t get my boot...

Bullfrog There’s a smell, a humid kind of smell. Wet concrete—car fumes. A firehydrant cracked open, cool water steaming on the New York July sidewalk. I remember because my feet were burning. Cool water on too warm concrete soles. Mom says I must have had an eidetic memory when I was that age. I don’t think so. Everything just felt worth remembering then. Like—there was this tree outside my bedroom window, right? And when it rained, the leaves looked like a green-haired, bearded dragon, breathing fire-water into the gutt...
