The sound of the kettle rose to a crescendo blocking out every other sound for several seconds. Then with a click it switched itself off and calm returned to the immaculate kitchen. Henry hardly recognised himself as he looked in the mirror. He was a confirmed bachelor of course. Everybody said so. He said so himself on frequent occasions.
