The Gymnast

Weekly Contest #373

Contains suicide, references to mental health and implied sexual abuse. All manner of emergency vehicles surrounds the street: with paramedics and police moving in and out of a garage roller door. There are curious onlookers, from the neighbourhood, standing on the suburban street. “Vultures! These neighbours are going to be gossiping bout all this,” remarks Frankie, a sibling, as he arrives at the family home, having received a phone call from his mum. There was a call made to the police, of a young man’s fatal overdose. The deceased know...

Happy Heavenly 23rd Birthday (A Reimagining of Last Kiss by Pearl Jam)

Weekly Contest #369

Happy heavenly 23rd birthday my sister. It is now one year since you departed this earthly domain. Rosa was 22 on the day: having recently met a new guy she liked and she was going on a date. I can remember her at home in our bathroom. She was getting ready, fussing over her earrings in the mirror, beaming with a youthful exuberance. Then it was onto her hair. “How about this length? Does this stand out too much? How about this?” These were questions she asked us as her hands fidgeted and adjusted. Our youngest sister Francesca had been look...

Sagarmatha (Mount Everest)

Weekly Contest #363

Kiri looks over her shoulder, the sky, once a pale white has darkened. The summit is now distinguishable but is still too far. It looks impossibly high, the one mountain peak she’s dreamed about reaching her entire life; and it is just beyond their reach. The bad weather is closing in, clouding their judgement and halting their progress. With the month of May coming to an end, there won’t be another opportunity this year. May is the only time to climb Everest, because the weather is favourable compared to other months. Along with the Sherpa...

Una Casa Molto Amata (A House Well Loved)

Weekly Contest #362

I’ve been dreading this day, for a while. We’ve sold the house that my siblings and I grew up in. Five years after our mum passed away, at age 90. Once she had gone, we knew this home of so many memories would leave our family. “Ciao Gianni.” I open the front door for my brother. He is here to have a last look with me around the house, making sure we have emptied everything. Of course, it’s also the last chance to say bye to this home. “Hi Melina, how are you?” and he kisses me on the cheek. We start to take a stroll around the house and all...

The Child in Lilac

Weekly Contest #360

“Ahh,” Ethan wakes, peering around the room, it’s dark. “Mom!” The night is silent and still. Just the sound of his ticking clock on the wall. He looks out his open window at the stars in the sky. He pushes down his Where’s Waldo duvet. Ethan’s mother rushes into the bedroom. “Had a bad dream sweetie?” Ethan nods. “Are you ok? Your doctor said it is to be expected.” His mother is beside his bed, turning the bedroom lamp on. “What happened in your dream?” she asks Ethan. “I saw a girl on a road. She looked so sad.” “And then what happened?” ...

Frederick Steele's Last Case

Weekly Contest #350

Photos of Detective Chief Inspector Frederick Steele sit on his home office wall. There are newspaper clippings of successful cases, headlines like “Steele Resolve, Beats the Bandits,” and “Interrogation of Steele Breaks Open the Case.”Frederick Steele, his face wrinkled, was wearied by 25 years in the job. A bottle of un-opened champagne sat on his home office desk. A celebratory bottle for his retirement. Sitting back in his chair, Frederick felt he could turn his attention to other things now. Like his glucose levels. He is already type 1...

The Child Underwater

Weekly Contest #348

It is just after midday on the main street of the town where Cassie and Ethan now live together. They turn into Nguyen’s Corner, established in 1979. This place has become a new favourite restaurant of theirs. Cassie and Ethan join a queue to get some takeaway food. “Extra patè again is it? And you don’t like it spicy,” says one of the restaurant owners preparing their Bahn Mi orders. “Yes." The crackle of an old radio is on, just loud enough to be heard above the murmur of conversation around them. A reporter is talking. “With America enter...

Suburban Riot

Weekly Contest #342

CW: Brief sexually inappropriate content I am sitting at the classroom table. Chris my friend is next to me. “Check this out,” Chris says. He hands me his phone and I see photos of the school formal from last weekend. In one of the photos Chris is standing beside a few girls, with his hands on his hips. He is wearing a suit jacket but is otherwise shirtless underneath. “Nice look you got going there,” I say. “Yeah, girls like it.” Looking at Chris’s photos of people from school, I see Audrey in one of them. She’s with her friends. My first ...
