“Shhhhhh!” Karla leapt across the road and tackled Detz. The boy didn’t have time to finish speaking before he was forced into the ditch by the roadside. Their packs, rifles and great mounds of snow spilt into the little trench. With her hand clamped over his mouth, they lay there and listened, staring in the direction of the leafless trees. The snow had begun to fall before either of them moved again. Slowly, Karla turned to look at Detz and motioned first to her ear and then at him, furrowing her brow. Detz shook his head a...

It’s very striking. Impossible to ignore, but you try. You don’t want to think about it. It’s a whale. In a tank. At dinner. You will have heard about it before you came. It’s the first thing out of anyone’s mouth the second Lord Gannon is mentioned. “You know he keeps a whale in a tank?” There’s no way you can escape knowing. By the time you’ve set foot on the estate for your first soiree at Lord Gannon’s manor, you know all about the Whale. You’ll know that she’s light blue, almost white. You know he’s h...

A tear streaked down Abe’s cheek as he stomped down the steps of the bank. “Foreclosed!” He screeched. “Foreclosed! Beatrice, they’ve taken it!” He reached the carriage where Beatrice was waiting for him and threw himself against it with a wailing cry. She observed him as she always did when he got emotional; completely unfazed. Abe turned to her, cheeks red as if slapped. “That’s it!” he declared. “They’re gonna take Pa’s farm and sell it and there’s nothing we can do!” Beatrice shrugged. “Don’t think that’s true, Abe.” “Oh do...

By the time I stepped outside, the leaves were on fire. It wasn’t a convenient time for them to be ablaze as I hadn’t yet adjusted to this narrative. This road was flanked on either side with these strange tall trees - willow trees I think (an impressive deduction to make within a minute of existing if I do say so myself). And yes, the leaves were on fire. It wasn’t a warm fire, from what I could te...
