Safe Passage

This war, this war has changed everything. Families and friendships broken, gone forever. Widows and orphans are commonplace now. It’s as though the world itself has stopped, society locked in the same stalemate I am forced to hold. Seven years since this deadlock began. The western front. A line of ships patrolling a stretch of sea, fifteen hundred miles long. The last line of defence between Imperia Reach and Bedlem Key. Most of what remains of the Imperial Navy, halting the advance of the Kingdom of Malguinem. Ever since the bloody fall o...

The Raven’s Parting

Weekly Contest #336

Damned my head. That wine is far too good. I hate this ship. Wait. Are we out to sea again? Did we… did we leave last night? “Gustav?” Oh shit. It’s him. “Penn, how are. Burp! Oh, my stomach. How are you?” “I’m fine,” he says, rubbing at his arm, the movement stiff. “Just a little scratched up and…” “Burp!” “Hmmm.” Why does he always look at me like that. Like I’m a problem he’s been assigned. “Yes, good, good.” I wave a hand, the world tilting unpleasantly beneath my feet. “Have you seen my brother?” He’s probably already in full pirate-cap...

We Are Not the Same

Weekly Contest #336

“Idiot!” “Why are you always so mean to me?” “Because you are so pathetic!” “I, I…” “You don’t even have a name! Ha! Oak! You chose the first thing you saw when you woke up!” “It was… it was all I remembered. It was safe.” “Safe? Ha! You have never been safe! They hate you. They hate us.” “You’re wrong, Neoleth! They like me! We’re friends!” “No, they don’t! They fear you! Everyone in Trencore fears you. Fears us, what both of us can do! That’s why that damned witch…” “No, not her, she… she…” “Oh? What, you’re still afraid of her?” “I…” “Why...

The Raven’s Return

Weekly Contest #335

This city has changed so much. Only four years, and yet the once-infallible council has faded into obscurity. The city, the whole island, now dances on a puppet’s strings. Lynn Stoneheart. Ha! All her power comes from the under-hand pay she takes from King Malguinem. This island might as well already belong to him. Ravensport, at least they kept the name, but for how long. “Cap’in?” There’s a hitch in Penn’s voice. Just enough to make me look over my shoulder. “Yes, Penn?” He swallows, eyes flicking toward the docks. “They’re not gonna let u...

A Realm That Dreams

Weekly Contest #335

In my rage, I tore open the very fabric of reality. The realm split apart before me. The moment the void touched me, I was pulled in. Sol disappeared behind me, and there was only darkness. Infinite voices screamed for supremacy, filling my mind. Until one began to drown out the others. The darkness here was not merely the absence of light. It was a churning collision of laws and realities. Up was not always up. Distance twisted. Focusing, thinking only made the madness worse. Dim spheres of every colour stretched endlessly before me. As I t...

The Truth We Hid

Weekly Contest #334

Miss Zayne, I understand you believe you have more to give me. However, my sources are already being examined. The paper itself has come under scrutiny following the alleged traitorous slander printed after the Ventoria scandal. I cannot continue receiving these letters. It is only a matter of time before they search my home while I am away. This is not a matter of trust. Despite his faults, your courier has proven himself reliable. Still, for your own sake as much as mine, I urge that this be our final correspondence. Sincerely, Fven Yanour...

Another Lavish Party

Another lavish party. Another waste of expensive food and wine. My master has been throwing more of these lately. Being a butler to this man is like herding cats, if the cats were drunk, rich, and convinced the world revolved around them. He is a fool. A rich, aristocratic fool, yes, but a fool all the same. One of the old Eldoran families. Possibly related to the emperor somewhere. Far, far back, buried in lineage and dust. Now? Just a taboo noble wasting his fortune on food, wine, and whores. No woman will ever marry him. He has carved too...

The Storm’s Hunger

Weekly Contest #333

Wulfric the Swift. So many stories are told of that dragon. Too many, perhaps. And most of them miss the truth. For in the end, Wulfric did not hunger for food, nor gold. He did not crave dominion, nor vengeance. He was not driven by the old draconic sins. He hungered for something far worse. Fame. Or, more accurately, fear. The youngest child of the great draconic prime, Wulfric was born of royal blood, enough to open every sky to him. A storm dragon, at one with wind and thunder. The high peaks were his home, and there he lived with his ki...

Where the Wind Leads

Weekly Contest #332

The caves, well, the tunnels, they seemed like they would never end. But the stone wasn’t excavated. Not by man, at least. Didn’t look natural either. The rock was coarse, sure, but the shape… almost a perfect circle. They wound and twisted like some great creature’s veins. A maze. A gigantic maze hidden beneath Eldara. There was just the three of us. We were only looking for somewhere to sleep. Streets get far too cold this time of year, and when you can’t defend yourself, your options are slim. We just stumbled across the place by accident...

The Lost Account of Ernest Reacioux

Weekly Contest #331

Journal of Ernest Reacioux DAY 5 – Evening It’s been four days since we passed the Frozen Step. Even the top-of-the-line airships suffer in this cold. The air is too thin for proper propulsion, and the engines keep freezing. We broke through the ice north of Vavir. Ig’Narion’s Back lies ahead. The mountain is so much larger up close. Its peaks rising beyond the clouds, as though reaching for Sol herself. The Dwarves of Vavir warned us. Yet they didn’t stop us. The mountain is holy to them. Ig’Narion’s Back. Named in their creation myth. The ...

Fortune’s Final Heir

Weekly Contest #330

I lost it all, and they just laughed at me. I’ve disappointed many people in my life. Some I knew well, others I barely deserved to know at all. Perhaps one should expect nothing more from a life of gambling. A child born into a wealthy family, spoiled by comfort and reputation. My mother, Elara Zayne, built her empire with inventions that changed the world. My father, the man clever enough to woo her, used his connections to pull her genius out of obscurity and into the modern age. And then there was me. The youngest son. The man with money...
