Weekly Contest #373
It’s happening again. After thinking that going through it before could help me control it this time. At least, that’s what I thought about it last time. Every time I find a way around, it goes around, escapes, and comes back. I’ve tried trapping it before; it didn’t work. I’ve tried running away, begging it to stop, trying to set it to chase someone else. Never worked. It has its sights set on me. So, I decided to give up. “Take me,” I said. And, to my surprise, it stopped chasing me. You couldn’t imagine the relief I felt. For the first ti...
Weekly Contest #358
It was over by the kitchen top. Withered beyond sight. Blackened to the root like a tar-infested smoker’s lung. I came back from work today at 8 PM, like every other day. It was at the exact spot where I had left it yesterday. Just like every other day, I took off my industrial shoes. Just like every other day, they were covered in dirt and grime from the day’s toil. And just like every other day for the past fifteen years, the first thing I did after taking off my shoes was pick it up from the kitchen top. When I first got it home, my s...
Weekly Contest #125
“Welcome back to the morning commercial slot. As you sip onto your coffees and scroll through your phones, where does your mind wander? Your mind lost focus already, but don’t fear your loss of focus, we’ve got you covered.” “Introducing to you, Anaitika Pharma’s latest over the counter, prescription free, dopamine control pills. Just pop two an hour, and work twice better in the same hour. Subscribe to our yearly supply and get a flat 25 percent discount right.” That was more or less the commercial which aired every morning. I hated watch...
Weekly Contest #108
I'll tell you how my routine goes about, I wake up every week day, just like the rest of them. I brush my teeth, and I get ready. I have my breakfast and go to office. Then I slave throughout the rest of the day in my office. I come back, I have my dinner and sleep. This goes on for the five week days. And then come Saturday and Sunday. The entire week's sleep deprivation is compensated and before no time it's Monday. What a boring story? Tell us something new, isn't that what I might get asked? Yes, I probably would ask the same if someo...
Weekly Contest #102
Whenever someone recalls their good old times, it always feels the same. They think that their time was the best, and right now is the worst. This cycle keeps going on, the older ones go on and on about how times have worsened, the younger ones grow up and tell the same when they are old. Although I can't say the same in my case, one thing I'm certain of is that a lot has changed since I was born. A bird decided to eat fruit from the fig tree which was my mother. That's when I first came to life, inside the stomach of the sparrow, surround...
Weekly Contest #101
This line will be repeated. This line will be repeated. This line will be repeated. "So that's it? That's how you're going to address the prompt? Just add a line three times?" "Yes, why not?" "What do you mean by why not? Where's your creativity, you just used up the lines and addressed the prompt. Those lines don't even make sense." "I am creative. I used up those lines and now my creativity is boundless. I've broken all the walls that restricted my free thought, and who knows, maybe more walls will be broken further." "But those lines d...
Weekly Contest #100
He fidgeted around with his pen as the clock struck quarter past 2. He heaved a sigh of relief as his shift would end in 15 minutes. Just then, he received a text from his boss, “I would like to wholeheartedly commend your commitment to our company. For the last 5431 days, you have shown the utmost loyalty and dedication in your work. Not only have you completed your daily tasks, but you have stayed back for an extra 6 hours and worked overtime, despite today being both a Sunday and a national holiday. Keep up the excellent work. You are tr...
TW: suicide When the thought of ending it first came, I was shocked beyond belief. I never expected to get such depressing thoughts. Then I pondered about it and then I shunned it all together. Yes, of course, suicide is an option to break away from the rat race. I could imagine why I would get such thoughts. I had to wake up reluctantly every day, I had to brush my teeth, then I had to eat, then I had go to office. And in office, someone else would take credit for my work, while I slave throughout the day. The tie that I wore, hung like a...
Weekly Contest #85
I was born in Bangalore, way before the corporate revolution hit India. We were satisfied with routine jobs and stable life. But my hometown was something else. The old British roads were still intact. The neatly spaced lines of copper pods never ceased to turn with the season. The air always seemed to smell of light vapor. The rainy seasons were particularly brilliant. Drinking spicy chai as the rain lightly flecked my face, that is definitely something I miss. Even the cold winters always brought a sense of warmth. The summers were never ...

Humans have always been judgmental beings. That is why they have assigned me the role of a ceiling fan. My only job is to look down on people because I cannot control the speed at which I turn. It is all in their hands. Those knob heads control me with a knob. And for the past ten years, I have been judging them as the ceiling fan of the Government Utility Bill Payment Office. Last March, I heaved a sigh of relief. For some reason, they were shutting down the world. This meant that the household ceiling fans had to work overtime, while I c...
Weekly Contest #51
Dileep’s undeterred gaze caught sight of the twinkling stars, through the small window of his cell. Over the past few years, his cell had lost its claustrophobic stranglehold on his imagination. Not straying far from the stereotypical environment of a central jail’s cell, Dileep’s cell looked a sorry state. The cell probably wasn’t longer than 10 feet in length, and every time Dileep stretched his arms the walls always blocked him. Dileep assumed that the cell probably wouldn’t be more than 6 feet wide. Every time he stood up, his head woul...
Weekly Contest #49
As I entered the main office, the flickering tube-lights failed to ignite my anxiety. I don’t remember the last time I had an episode of anxiety, I probably got used to it. I remember the sight of my face when I stared into my faded mirror in the morning. I don’t know even know how long and for how many days I’ve been nearly awake. My face had probably shrunken, I had managed to roughly shave off my stubble, but the razor cuts were clearly visible. I have gotten used to looking at my eyes red almost all the time. My hair had become matted, ...
