Weekly Contest #367
I feel that calling this my first death is rather apt, if somewhat dramatic; after all, what is death but leaving behind what we have known our whole lives and moving towards something unknown? Which is exactly what my crew and I are about to do. The lead-up to this day has taken decades to culminate. Perhaps, more aptly, it has taken the entire existence of humanity. It is impossible to pinpoint exactly when or where ideas began. All our advancements in medicine, technology and, most appropriately, space travel have come from these humble ...
Weekly Contest #362
“Chef Francis, dear, how are the oysters today, and did we obtain enough lobster for tonight?” “Yes, Ms Ashcombe. Alice bought the oysters from the seafood market this morning, and they smell as fresh as the ocean breeze. Plenty of lobster too. We are well prepped for our dinner tonight, Ma'am.” Ms Meredith Ashcombe, tenth-generation descendant of the original Maine shipping dynasty, peered around the bustling kitchen with satisfaction. Francis, her executive private chef, was the best money could buy and deserved her hefty paycheque. She ...
Weekly Contest #325
The breeze across my bare arm was so slight, I would have paid it no mind if it weren’t for the fact that I stood in the long, upper hallway of the mansion that had no excuse for air to be moving through it. All the doors along its length were closed. There were no windows. Strange, I thought as a shiver chased up my arm, leaving a trail of gooseflesh. I looked back the way I had come, squinting through the gloom. The hallway seemed to stretch out interminably. I felt as if I’d been walking along it for much longer than it should have taken...
Weekly Contest #266
This story is set in a war zone. There's some swearing and a brief episode of gore. I crouch low behind a pile of rubble barely big enough to protect my ass, let alone the rest of me. I aim to get all the vital bits tucked in and lay low—trying to make it damn near impossible for the sniper to get me with a one-and-done shot. Where the hell is he sitting? I scan the decimated buildings around me for any sign of my nemesis. A flash of sunlight off metal, a shadow that doesn’t quite fit in—but the rubble, the dark empty holes in the walls and...
Weekly Contest #264
It’s not often I end up somewhere I don’t plan, nor want, to be. This was, however, one of those situations. Idly, I reflect on what landed me here and conclude it was likely a case of me trying to get Misty to shut up and quit haranguing me. Our relationship is entirely superficial—as I like it. She’s got more curves than an F1 race in Monaco and is just as fast. Her big blue eyes sport a vacuous look that is entirely legit. In other words, I’m not banging her for her brain power. Don’t judge me too harshly; I feel it’s a pretty equitable ...
Weekly Contest #260
Betsy woke slowly, just as she did everything these days. The morning sun weaseled its way through the cracks in the curtains, bathing the room in a muted glow. She lay still and quiet on her bed, doing her morning inventory of her aches and pains. Fortunately, there weren’t too many yet. As long as she wasn’t moving, it was only the weight of her body holding her back, the idea that even lifting an arm would be too much of a task for her time-worn body. Back in her day, that feeling had only come after skiing all day and partying all night ...
Karla awoke to the soft sounds of her mother in the kitchen. The smells that greeted her made her mouth water. Mommy must be making something nummy. Her stomach grumbled in agreement. Karla yawned wide, stretching long and lean, enjoying the feeling as she relaxed again and snuggled into the blanket. Suddenly, it struck her—they were going to the zoo today! Although her fifth birthday had been last week, her parents had waited until today to take her to her favourite place because the zoo was opening a much-anticipated exhibit that Karla co...
