Weekly Contest #377
The car coasted into the rest stop, dead. It started sputtering when Bob turned on the headlights, and had barely made it to the exit. Now it was sitting cockeyed to the first two parking slots. The restrooms were almost half a block away and most of the lights between them and the yellow brick building were out or sputtering, but the lights inside were on. The trees lining the parking lot were singed, unlike the burned and downed trees along the freeway that had made the trip in more eerie than Bob would have liked. "Wonderful," Ginger ...
Weekly Contest #365
Bette had been his nemesis since third grade when she scratched his face. They'd patched their differences up briefly in high school when she started running with a different crowd. Her body had blossomed and she was gorgeous, and he briefly forgot the scratch, then in college while he was working as a TA for an art professor, he tried to help her sister by helping Gina become comfortable as an unclad model. He'd told Gina to imagine feeling each stroke of the pen or brush as the artists painted her. The fact that later Gina had gone out ...
Weekly Contest #352
Tanya had forced herself not to move. She thought playing dead might buy her some time before possibly having to delve into her dark past. Now she realized that it might have been a mistake to wait this long, but taking on two men at once was never a sure thing and the opportune moment to take them one at a time never came. "All this time, and I still wonder who would put a rabbit hole here in the middle of no where?" "Never-mind it's just the right size to drop the body in, then we can get out of here." "What if she wakes up?" "Throw her ...
Weekly Contest #335
Orson knew that wormholes could collapse at any time. The scanners used for collecting data in wormholes, were still in their primitive state, but his probe had made it safely to a nearby sector with almost no delay, so thrill-seeker Orson pressed the button on the helm that drove his tiny scout ship into the heart of the wormhole. No one was sure what happened inside a wormhole, but Orson was about to find out. He had expected the initial flash of light. He'd seen it with the probe, but now that he was inside the wormhole he couldn't mov...
Weekly Contest #316
Connie knew that there was little she could do to prepare herself for the plunge into the icy water just beyond the tiny shelter. The temperature of the water was probably below freezing but she would only be under for a few seconds. The fact that she was naked would not make any difference. Even the scanty panties the others wore would not provide enough protection to save them if they did not surface quickly. "On three," a voice sounded behind her. They each stepped out from under the shelter to the edge of the water. She took a deep b...
Weekly Contest #292
Denise Gray looked away from her reflection in the store window. The sight of that perfectly proportioned young body only served to remind her of the curse. As a young woman she’d posed for an enigmatic artist who had painted her picture while spinning words that were at once wonderful and frightening. It hadn’t been long after that, that she learned the reality of the painting and it’s associated curse. One day she was accosted by a thief, and before she realized what was happening he had run a dagger through her heart. She cringed but when...
Weekly Contest #274
Gwen hated the exoskeleton, despite the fact that it was they only way she could move. The straw that broke the camel's back, (or her back, so to speak) was when the damned AI that controlled the thing unbuttoned her blouse, unbidden while she was on a blind date. "Sorry..." she whispered as she stood and left as quickly as the damned AI would allow. I was just trying to help. the AI element of the skeleton said. Well don't! Gwen cursed as she realized that they’d never told her how much of her thinking the AI would be able to hear. Before t...
Weekly Contest #264
It was supposed to be a joke, Sam thought. It had started with a simple second date, “Be my plus one at my sister’s wedding,” Jenn said. But now.... Jenn’s mother had tried to line Jenn up with a guy Jenn had dumped in high school. Her mother insisted he was a nice guy even after he began aggressively stalking her. Sam’d had a class with Jenn but in visiting she’d never showed interest in dating. Then she called late one Friday evening “Will you be my knight in shining armor?” she’d said. "Jenn?" "I have a stalker who is getting aggressive...
Weekly Contest #237
Dee hated this time of year. Every time someone coiled up a frozen garden hose the popping and cracking it made triggered the memory of that fateful day that her best friend nearly castrated her crush. He’d been standing on the second to the top rung of a metal gate and had just put his leg over to go to the other side when Clara pulled his foot off the rung. The popping of his balls as he hit sounded just like those hoses, and Dee had watched in horror as he turned blue while grasping his damaged family jewels. Clara just giggled as he fi...
Weekly Contest #221
You probably have never heard of the Anti-Anonymous writer’s conference, and that is a dirty rotten shame, especially if you have ever had any desire to write. The price was right too, the worst piece of writing you've ever done. "You know Rick that just might work." Michael grinned, his teeth glowing in the dimly lit bar. "Might? There's no doubt about it," Rick said, his green eyes glowing with that cat-like stare of his. "Even old Cal over there lit up when I explained it," he said rising to his full seven-foot height. "My only concern...
Weekly Contest #179
Angela woke in a cold sweat, again. It was absurd. This was the twenty first century. Knights in shining armor didn't rescue damsels in distress anymore. The damsels rescued themselves, and that crap about riding into the sunset.... She was content to be single, thank you very much. Her eyes finally focused on that stupid card a friend had given her, a name and a number. That's when the dreams had started, but this time had been different. She'd cried out, "Kevin, HELP ME!" Had she really said that out loud? Is that what woke her up? She to...
Weekly Contest #149
Andy had come here to clear his mind while he was searching for a solution to the problems at home. He struggled to get the tune that kept running through his head right as he whistled and walked through the foliage on this tiny deserted world. At least he assumed it was deserted. The sensors had picked up some large carnivores, but the tiny dragon that trotted by his side would be more than a match for them. Each time he got to a certain place in the tune things would fall apart, and he would be forced to try again. He stopped to survey his...
