The Witching Hour

Weekly Contest #378

It was after midnight when the sound of shattering glass woke me and brought me to my feet in a matter of seconds. Was there someone in the house? What was Caylie doing up in the middle of the night? At times like these I wish I had a significant other who would be the brave one to investigate the sounds that startle me from a deep sleep, but as a single, widowed mother of one child, it is up to me to get out of bed at this late hour. My mother and I have been exploring the east side neighborhood of Amhurst, Virginia, for hours, searching for houses for my fiancé and me to purchase. Shenanigans in the Woods

It is mid-fall, and a brisk, cool breeze blows through the trees in the forest where sixteen-year-old Gemma is walking to find a spot to sit. Shivering, she looks around amongst the trees, and a path is parted where she sees a couple trees bending with the wind blowing them. “Perfect!” Gemma says to herself, and sets off to that exact spot underneath a tree with a stump next to it where she can unpack her backpack and set up for the ritual that her and her friend are supposed to do. ‘Where is she?’ Gemma thinks to herself uninspired to even ...
