My Kitchen Chaos

Weekly Contest #350

„Mama! Maaaamaaa!“ I step to the sink. With one hand, I open the tap. The water rushes out. It hits the spoon. A small fountain sprays upwards, soaking my apron. I wash the onion juice off my fingers. My eyes are still tearing. I sniff. “Mama!” I wipe my fingers on the now damp apron. Then I turn towards the door. Before rushing out, I check the kitchen. Knives – put away. Stove – not on yet. “What is it?” I put a smile on my lips, after clearing my throat. “What happened, my dear?” The moment I step out of the kitchen, my smile broadens. I ...

Scavenger Hunt

Weekly Contest #349

„The rain has stopped!“ Immediately the shelter is filled with the sound of naked feet on stone floor. There is the rustling of clothes. They are mixed with zippers being closed. Finally, the door creaks open and sunlight streams in the hall. - “Group 1 and 2?” “Present, task leader Melanie and Sylvie.” - “Group 3 and 4?” “Present, task leader Marta and Simone.” - “Group 5?” Heads turn. Wet rubber on tiles carry rushed movements. - “Group 5?” “Present, we’re… we’re present.” - “Who’s leading?” “Hm… it’s… hu… Sara?” - “Was this an answer?“ Th...

Merlion Dreams

Weekly Contest #349

31st of April Today is April 31. I still can’t believe it! They really changed the dates. But if you think about it, it makes so much sense. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event! I asked Nainai, if she’s excited to witness this change. She only nodded. I think I saw tears in her eyes. Never mind! I know it’s important. I know the government is going to bring further great ideas forward. Just like Pa, I’m going to help build a better future. 4th of May I’ve packed everything and we’re ready to leave. Everyone except for Nainai. She doesn’t want t...

Robin

Weekly Contest #349

“Is this really necessary?” - “We don’t know how long she’s been out there. Do you want to risk it?” “Maybe… we should ask Joe.” - “Maybe we should ask Joe.” “Stop copying me.” - “Well, then think for yourself for once. The rules are set. Now help me.” Rough hands grab my wrists. Gravel is scraping my skin. I want to scream. “She’s so heavy. Maybe we should have taken the kid.” - “No. We need the adults.” The kid? Robin! Putting all my strength into my legs, I kick. “Woah!” The back of my head hits the gravel. Pain. It’s a pulse. My eyes fly...

Salamander

Weekly Contest #348

What? Ugh. Why is it wet? The cold-wet sensation makes my toes curl. My socks get even wetter. I look at my feet. Scanning the floor, I finally catch the reflection of the small puddle. Half the size of a footprint. I frown but the damp sensation is too irritating. Teetering on my heels, I wobble into the kitchen. I pull the chair, sit down and peel off my socks. Light blue turned dark. From the toe tips to the arch. Halfway hanging them over the backrest of my chair, a whiff of the wet odor rises up my nose. My hands are tightening. Water d...

To Ask the Living

The shop was weatherworn, with paint peeling off the window frames. Without the recommendation, Greg would have passed the shop without a second glance. Once he stepped into the pharmacy, the complete opposite greeted him. The walls were washed white. The floorboards, although clearly old, were clean and well-maintained. A short man stood behind the counter. The wall of tiny drawers made him appear even shorter. The moment Greg entered the pharmacy, he looked up expectantly. “Welcome, Constable. How may I help you?” The voice was warm. Greg ...

The picture of the cat

Weekly Contest #348

Brown fur. Which one would work? Lea’s fingers stroked gently over the neatly arranged coloured pencils in the box. Seeing the colours, she waited for the right feeling. A light tickling of her fingertips. A sped-up beat of her heart. Van-Dyck. Walnut. Umbra. The silver lettering shimmered under the light of her desk lamp. The half-finished cat in front of her waited for its fur. Then she felt it. The tingling. Huh? Nougat? The moment Lea fished out the pencil, she heard the footsteps. Dropping the pencil, her fingers found the light switch....

Schlaraffia

Weekly Contest #347

The dig The groans and heavy wheezing filled the humid tunnel air. Yet, it was dulled by the sticky walls, which glowed in a slimy ivory color under the light of their headlamps. Johan felt sick to his stomach, breathing in the creamy, sweet air. His steps were heavy, fighting against the gluey ground with every step. Hearing one of his men losing the fight against the nausea, Johan could taste bile in his mouth. Keep it in. You’re almost there. A tap on his shoulders made him snap around. With sudden movement his stomach protested. He had t...

To Mourn the Dead

The air was heavy with incense. Greg looked around as inconspicuously as possible. This wasn’t a crime scene. This was a funeral. The mourning hall in the temple was lavishly decorated. There were flower wreaths almost turning the hall in a flower shop. Religious sutras to mourn the deceased reverberated through the hall. A few people were paying respect to the family when Greg and his colleagues arrived. Only Master Andros, the Matron and Master Linden were present representing the family. While the husband was eagerly talking to one of the...

A cup of tea

It’s a simple white cup sitting on a cushion. A teapot is placed next to it. A faint flowery scent fills the air. Delicate pale fingers tip the empty cup’s brim. “So, what brings you here today?” The blond woman looks up from the silver service tray to the brunette who is sitting opposite her. Both wear smiles, stitched onto their faces. “Oh, I heard you were struggling with your health the last few days. I wanted to make sure you were fine. You look quite pale.” The late afternoon sun bathes the room in warm light but produces a red halo ar...

My dear daughter

Weekly Contest #347

„Don’t wrap it like this. It’ll break. You have to first take the bubble wrap. Then you wrap it in newspaper. Finally, you secure it with tape. Not too much. If it’s too tight, it’ll break as well.” Paula’s fingers worked the way her father wanted. The flat was in chaos. Empty boxes, half empty shelves, bags of garbage, bags marked for donation. How are we ever going to finish till tomorrow? “Do you think I should take this book along?” She looked up from her task, wrapping a plate which she couldn’t remember her father had ever used. Her fa...

Weekly Contest #346

There were three lamps blinking eagerly on the grey switchboard. Anabel looked over to her colleagues. They were all busy with their own calls. Wolfgang’s grumbling voice reached her despite being at the other end of the office. Drake, who was sitting in close proximity to the werewolf wasn’t bothered by the low growls. Anabel saw his lips moving too but she couldn’t make out any sound. Well, let’s just assume he’s really working. She wanted to look at Gan as well but then stopped. His melodic voice travelled over to her. Out of the corner o...

Three clouds in the red sky

Weekly Contest #346

“Do you know you can wish for anything? I mean … If there is a red sky with three clouds in the morning. Then your wish will come true.” Sharpening his sword, the guard didn’t look up but nodded. “Three clouds, Sven. And a red sky.” Still concentrating on his task, the silence grew and he cleared his throat. His eyes were still on the shining metal in his hands. “What exactly do you mean by that? How can there be only three clouds?” The light giggle made him smile involuntarily, but his focus didn’t waver. “Well, you count them. One – two – ...

Weekly Contest #346

It’s too quiet. The thought crosses my mind. I jolt up. The sky is still dark. Just the streetlights bathe our bedroom in a fuzzy half-darkness. Forgot to let down the blinds again. My eyes try to focus on the person next to me. The longer I stare, the easier I can see his shape. As if in answer, he lifts his arm to support his head. His sleep mask doesn’t budge. It was a birthday present worth its money. I turn around to check my phone. The display lights up. Blinding me and I squint my eyes. Ugh. 4.30. I fall back into my pillow. The blank...

Just a moment

The hissing sounds made Synthia take a step back. The dark smoke in front of her spat a green liquid in her direction. Like following a delicate dance pattern, she sidestepped and avoided the suspicious liquid with grace. Instead, it hit the pavement with a splat, followed by the sound of meat hitting a hot pan. Now, come on, I’m not the enemy here. She looked around the dark alley. They were alone. It was just her, the dark floating mass and the corpse. Shouldn’t have taken the Narrow Road today. Guess I lost my bet again. With a quick look...
