The shadows, once strange in my youth, were nothing but a backdrop to the capacious living hall - long, sweeping things painting the paneled floors, leaving the soft layer of dust atop them undisturbed. Flashes of lightning, at the very least, were somewhat unpredictable - almost a kindness in their intermittence, a disruption of the mundane. My gaze lifted towards the darkened night sky, the steadfast, ever-present stars obscured by the ominous, rolling clouds illuminated by the flickering of the storm.
