Weekly Contest #306
Tuesday, February 20th 2:20pm To: lorettajeanineparker01@mail.nmc.edu From: chandler77@mail.nmc.edu SUBJECT: Help with English 112 paper Dear Miss Parker, My name is Joseph Chandler and my instructor, Professor Sarah Devron, suggested that I contact you for help with my English 112 essay since you have been in this class before and are also now in another more advanced English class. My problem is that I want to write my paper on the subject of researching why some people are color blind and what causes that. Would you happen to have some t...
Weekly Contest #283
Christmas Eve 2024 The snow sifted down in large wet flakes, turning into water as soon as they hit the sidewalk. The wind was getting slightly more chilly as the night wore on and more people were coming out of hiding, creating a crowd that for the most part went unnoticed by one slender, dark-haired girl. Nadine lowered her gaze slightly against the chill of the wind and tears pooled in her eyes. She hadn’t realized it would hurt this much. It felt like a ball of pain in the middle of her being that couldn’t be reached. The pain wasn’t ph...
Weekly Contest #229
Cartersville, West Virginia The door to her office squeaked and she swiveled the chair around. Her friend and co-worker, Sayla, popped her head in. “Hey, Lorena,” she began, the dimpled corners of her mouth quirking up, “Whatcha doing for the holidays?” The holidays. Christmas. New Year’s Day. Everyone was always asking the same question around this time of year. Truthfully, she wished she could forget the holidays or at least spend them catching up on the extra paperwork and articles constantly demanding her attention. Mentally revertin...
Weekly Contest #207
I arrived at the restaurant promptly at seven and punched in as soon as I hung my backpack in the back closet. This was a several story high building, but I worked on the bottom floor in Billy’s Breakfast Burrito. It was a lovely place to have a job, . . .most of the time. The servers had already turned over the glasses in the dining room and the host was getting ready to open the doors. Quickly, I straightened my brown uniform and pinned on my name tag. Our supervisor, Paul Jillett, a.k.a. The Speeding Comet, swept past me, true to his nick...
Weekly Contest #191
Her father’s voice sounded hollow. He glanced around the room as if looking for someone or something else besides the small maid before them. “Professor Alvin Trewella. And this is my daughter. May I see the...Madam?” “Right this way, sir.” The corridor was long and narrow. Cobwebs hung along the ceiling like so many little hammocks and the smell of moth balls was overpowering. The place gave the impression of a giant storage tote. At the end of the corridor, there was a plain brown door. The employee turned the knob and the door creaked ...
Weekly Contest #180
March 3rd, 2022 Gratiot; The Red Zone; Detroit, MI, USA The wind whipped through his thin clothes and penetrated his bones. He bent over and dug deeper into the trash can, ignoring the stench of rotting food and dirty diapers. It was a shame that people didn’t throw away good clothes. He could sure use something more than the pair of ragged jeans and the light, sleeveless vest that currently were doing little to keep out the weather. Reaching the bottom of the garbage bag, he tossed out a jagged piece of glass and wrapped his long fingers...
Weekly Contest #177
I shifted my position slightly and looked up from my artwork. The trees swayed in the breeze, and I watched a blackbird fly in front of me and lite high in a nearby maple. He opened his beak wide, and I tilted my head, watching him. In short order, he was joined by another bird. The breeze ruffled through her sooty-brown plumage as she landed on the branch beside him. They were a pair. They were together. They had each other. My pencil moved rapidly across the paper as I wished, not for the first time, that graphite was not just black and wh...
Weekly Contest #171
June 5th, 2028 Roscommon, MI I stood on the deck, forearms resting on the wooden railing, and gazed out at the view before me. A huge woods surrounded the clearing that the house was in. Frankly, I was surprised that foresters hadn’t come in and logged the place off while I was gone. A large pond separated the house from the swamp and I could almost see the huge trees reflected in the olive green water. I blinked and glanced down...
Weekly Contest #167
Greenville, South Carolina “Where’s my kid?” The small man’s dark, handlebar mustache trembled. He leaned forward and placed his hands, palms down, onto the paperwork-littered surface of the police sergeant’s desk. “Where’s my kid?” he repeated. “I know he’s here. I need to take him home. He’s…he’s not stable.” The desk sergeant swiveled around in his chair and took a long look at the man before him. “State your name, please, sir.” “Morlan Keeleigh. He’s…he’s not reliable, okay?” His left hand shook slightly. “You get what I’m saying, rig...
