Weekly Contest #376
Delilah wafts down the corridors of The Aurora. She has no intentions. She'd had them once. Intentions. For the first few years after her death, she had plenty. She'd tried being a part of the life of the living. That presence they couldn't explain hanging over their shoulders. Just out of sight. A thing there to them, and yet not there. But she'd seen how their lives had moved on without her. It had made her depressed. Little by little, she'd drifted away. She didn't even know where her people were now. It doesn't matter. Nothing matt...
Weekly Contest #97
I yawn. Somewhere between the boisterous music and the haze in my brain, I realize we’ve been here way too late. How did that happen? Eh. It’s fine. It can’t be that late really, can it? I’ve been waiting a long time to get one more song in on karaoke before we head home for the night. But the outdoor patio of the bar has become super crowded with people. Some are so inebriated they can’t walk out on their own. I had hoped to hear that young lady sing again, too. She’s a pretty girl with a pretty voice, but no self confidence. She’...
An...interesting window adorns my boyfriend’s house. He bought the house when his parents passed on to the summerland. So, all his siblings got money; he got the house. You know, one of those deals. Originally, the house belonged to his great-great-grandparents. It’s been passed down through the line. Always one of the male children takes it over from the parents. Except for one time. The name Lilly comes up in whispers. But if I ask, or they notice me listening, they shut up. I assume from what I’ve caught that that generation had...
Weekly Contest #96
She didn’t ever think she’d see the floor in this room again. But, low and behold, there it is. Rebecca DuMaul had forgotten what color it was. Blue speckled. It’s taken her months to dig her way to the bottom. Months. Cal was never organized. She fought some to try to change that. Some. But that was a no-win battle. It’s not like Becky was ever organized. How could she ever expect him to be any different. So much clutter remains in piles and boxes and tubs. Sticks. Foam swords. Legos, legos, and more legos. Lego creations Bec...
Weekly Contest #93
“Wanna go to the Cave this weekend?” I’m instantly irritated. Bob’s old hang out. We haven’t gone even once since we started dating. You know how it goes. Covid plague shut the world down. Life got crazy busy. He hasn't been wanting to go back out to bars, because he has to have a pool table to play on when he goes out. They kept the pool tables off limits for months after opening the bars back up. “Sure” They have karaoke. I do enjoy me some karaoke. Friday rolls around. Albert comes over. My soul groans. Don’t get me wrong....
“Albert! What ya doin’ Friday?” “Oh, I ain’t doin’ nothin’. What you got in mind?” Lol. “I’m going to Lenny’s” “Oh, yea, I’ll go to Lenny’s. I ain’t got nothin’ goin’ on, like I said.” I bristle. Blankin’ Lenny’s We haven’t gone back there since ‘that night.’ I’m irritated. Not just because of what took place the last time we were there, but Bob didn’t include me or discuss it with me. Just decided, and made it official by inviting Albert. He’s more than a bit lucky he hangs with Albert. Albert’s a good ‘ole boy from the hills o...
Weekly Contest #92
Thump, thump, thump. Thump, thump-thump. Shit. What time is it? Was Bob supposed to pick up the kids? No...they wouldn’t be knocking at the door, they’d be calling. Did something happen on their way home from work? Thump thump thump. The blankets have me, the bed’s high, I’m disoriented. I practically fall getting out. Thump, thu-thump. Bob stirs. I shake my head to wake it and glance at my attire. Good ‘nough. I trudge-stumble to the door. Trying not to think about what disaster is waiting outside the door. Maybe I can handl...
