People Like Them

Weekly Contest #367

March, 1813, Lancashire, England The cat moved as nothing but shadow in the misty, pre-dawn dark, hugging the wall of a warehouse she used as refuge. Her ears had long before picked up the sound of what sharp, feline vision now saw: a noisy crowd of people. Hopping lithely up the haphazard stack of crates that served as her stairway she climbed to the second floor where she curled up on a wide, stone, window sill, watching the activity unfold below. Molly Sloan was cold to the bone and terrified. Struggling to see a across the square towar...

Just Jane

Weekly Contest #363

“Are you sure you don’t want to stay at my place tonight? There’s plenty of room.” Night came early to Maine in mid-January. Waking just moments earlier to icy fingers of a cold sweat, a sour stomach and achy left leg, he stumped into the kitchen. The water pipes in his third floor walk-up in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood clanged as he filled his cleanest dirty styrofoam cup. Pivoting to the microwave he dropped it on the turntable and hit the timer for two minutes. While the cup rotated he grabbed his cell phone, opening the Duck Duck Go browser and typing in: Grandwo...

Bip

Weekly Contest #334

Bip Bip still didn’t understand humans. Despite now having been here for two full orbits of this planet around the rather minor star they liked to call “the Sun” so much of the behavior of this world’s allegedly apex species left him nothing if not mystified. “C’mon, Clancy, time to eat!” ‘That’s the young female, Nellie. She will prepare a meal for me now’ Bip thought. “While she is a human, she caters to the want’s and needs of a subservient species, a canine, like it is I that is the master. She and the rest of this group provide me wit...

Right This Way

Weekly Contest #329

CW: Depictions of medical trauma “Right This Way Frances Crane’s stretcher made the hard left turn into Trauma Two, full CPR in progress. Abbey Roth, EMT on the ambulance crew, addressing the ER physician on duty, launched into her well rehearsed spiel; “Frances Crane, 86. We were called by a neighbor who heard a loud thump coming from the apartment upstairs. On arrival patient was found down on the floor, minimally responsive. O2 sat 84% on room air, sinus tach at 130, pressure 94 over 52. During transport patient went totally unresponsiv...
