The Next Step

Weekly Contest #317

“I really need you to hear this. It is important to me.” He sounded so sincere and clear headed. Trust was a major issue here. She decided due to his sincere tone she could at least listen. “I will not keep anything that isn't safe to myself.” “No, there isn't any of that,” his voice cracked. “You haven’t changed a bit; you are still that good person.” Watching him while thinking this over. In the past he had many good characteristics. Only the good had become sodden and sank into the depths of an ocean. She had drowned right along with them...

Criminal

Weekly Contest #306

Dear diary, OMG!!! Did I ever get a surprise tonight! Things like this don't happen to people like me. I'm just the old working mom. Sure wasn't a nice surprise. I gotta tell you, I think my blood pressure was up. I just wanted to know what was happening. Shock is still happening, I think. My heart is still beating fast. And I'm home in bed, safe and sound. At least I hope I am. Who's to say that I really am safe. So glad my kids weren't with me. Never want them in a situation like that. On the plus side, dear diary, I didn't get shot. I got...

Future Landscaping

Weekly Contest #305

You know what? I quit. With that thought rolling around in my head, I stared at the crowd and told the biggest lie of my life. “I would love to, Auntie May.” He looked between us once more and said, “it's either her or me...” Turning to me he smiled, “or we can try to do the job together if you will have me as your partner...” Not in thousand years. Work with him? Never. Once was enough! “No, thank you. I can do this, not a problem.” Yeah, right. The problem was I had no idea how to do this small job as they called it, but I had to. The voic...

The Perfect Recipe

Weekly Contest #270

“Don’t go without enough sleep, Jess. You have to be tip top tomorrow,” Bruce always gets to the point right off. “Yes, sir. I need to perfect this new sauce. I believe it will enhance Friday’s meal plan. Oh…I know what it needs,” Jessica Parker rushed off to the spice rack. The jars rattled as she searched for the spice, but it was no where to be found. Deciding to look for it around the kitchen, just in case it had been left out. She called to Bruce, “do you know where the nutmeg is? I don’t see it here.” “Sorry, no idea,” came the deep re...

The Wedding Shocker

Weekly Contest #264

The wind picked up speed with stronger gusts whipping the veil from the bride’s head. Gasps stolen by another strong gust. The dull roar tearing the flower arrangements from their vases and scattering them like litter. The strong breeze shaking the cotton wood leaves from their branches. Wedding guests scampered around the rows of seats, heading in the direction of the open field. Several ladies stopped to cover their gaping mouths, as their husbands tugged them away from the ceremony. The force of air grabbed the brides carefully arrange l...

Emergency

Weekly Contest #263

Emergency “You’ll be up and running on all cylinders in no time.” That's what they said. Every single one of them. After spending months, almost two years, arguing with the doctors that work was not possible, but falling to my knees was. I think the labs have drained me twice over. There was not a day or an hour I didn't wonder if it was my last. Going to sleep was another matter, simply put, exhaustion took over from staying awake twelve hours. This unwanted journey felt to have been a lifetime, nearly was in fact. The problem arose one nig...

Catch the Moment

Weekly Contest #244

“What are you doing?” “Oh my gosh!” “What’s happening, Sandy? Are you okay?” A slight squeak, turned moan. Sandy frantically tore at her clothing. Between the sounds and heavy breathing, she was too occupied to respond, if she even heard. The clothing flew in all directions were being shed like snakeskin. It appeared as if there was a snake in them. Cassie tried to grab her sister’s arm, narrowly missing as a pair of pants zinged passed her head. By all appearances Sandy had completely lost her mind. What was going on? Sandy was always modes...

Shellshocked

Weekly Contest #238

“What the ?!?” It could not be. “No…” moaned Joanne. In the middle of the cattle herd was a miniature horse with one of the mother cows licking its face to a near glowing white. “How the hhe…?!?” No one around our ranch had miniature horses. My little sister, Macy, giggles, leaning her head to the side. “I think she's cute.” “Well…” this sounds like Joanne is as speechless as I am. The cow continued to lick the horse while her calf nursed. Nothing was off for them but for my sisters and I there was a mystery horse in our herd. Where ha...

The Fight

Weekly Contest #217

Jane gazed into the bright orange setting sun, dreaming. It was evenings like these that get one’s dreams flowing. The warm breeze tousling her sagging curls, and caressing her cooling skin. The caress much like his. The memories flooding her with warmth, the warmth caused by his sweet gentle touch upon her cheek, as he knelt on one knee. “Will you marry me, my sweet Jane? I promise to love always. Please Jane, make me a happy man.” “I am already married to you in my heart,” Jane whispered into the breeze, like she had done so long ago. As...

A Year for Sisters

Weekly Contest #212

September 25, 1887 Dear Faith, How was your journey? I do hope and pray you have made it safely to your placement now. Elsie had seven babies, five girls and two boys, Dad is taking the boys to town on his fall run. He says with that many girls we could make a team. That will mean more ice fishing for Thomas to feed them. We got several pounds of potatoes. It was a good year for potatoes. Tomorrow I will start to pull the turnips. I miss you, my dear sister. I am proud of you. I know this is the beginning of your future. Blessings Lo...

A Sweet Love

The slight movement within my jacket is my reminder to search harder alongside Jane, the librarian who took upon herself to solve my predicament. Unable to continue our search in the bookshelves we turned our focus to the internet. Oh Lord! Is there ever lots of information out there but not much on what I need to know. A shift in comfort then warm then another twitch. I breathe a sigh of relief. Then my heart stops. The warmth turns to wetness as it seeps into my pants near my jeans’ zipper. What do I do now? Do I just sit here become stin...

Night Eyes

Weekly Contest #210

The call of the nighthawk mingled with the crackling of the campfire when the peaceful and calming sounds were disrupted by a slight rustle in the tall grass beyond the flames. “Ssh,” Tanner whispered. Tammy jolted up in the camping chair too quickly toppling it over backwards, her with it, hitting the back of her head on the firewood pile. “Tammy!” Groaning she raises her head from the wood as her boyfriend lifts her into his arms. The back of her head burning with pain, she inhales air to calm herself. “Are you okay?” he asks, cradlin...

In Honour of Barbie

Weekly Contest #208

Downsizing for a new beginning, Sandy told herself again. Repeating it had not made it the belief reality. Rather it seemed downsizing meant stress, tears and backbreaking pain. Shuffling another full box of stuff towards the attic door, she shook her head, another box of once treasure now old and broken items no longer wanted. Wincing she straightened up the best she could under the low ceiling and rafters, the pain was getting almost too much to bear, especially during the night, trying to sleep on the old mattress. ‘My poor back,’ Sandy t...

Getting to the Other Side

Weekly Contest #207

Placing the crisp white chef’s beanie over her hairnet Jessica Parker stares at the spotless silver wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. The silver was polished shining brighter than the blemish free stainless steel of the rest of the kitchen the owner sure had an obsession with the silver appearance. There were a few items around that were black or red but very few. Double checking her uniform she breathed in a few calming breaths, she always took them daily then stepped forward into the bustling staff. New to the restaurant Je...

The Call of the Full Moon

Weekly Contest #205

The Call of the Full Moon “I've been thinking”, Dad said as he stuffed a fork full of roast and gravy into his mouth. Everyone glanced up from their home cooked roast beef dinners, seeing his mouth was too full to continue, all went back to their own meals. “This is juicy, Nadine. Very good,” Dad smiled in my direction. “As I was saying, I've been thinking.” he paused as he drank some milk. A collective sigh surrounded the table. Chuckling, Dad wiped his milk moustache with a worn linen napkin. “I might be able to hold all of your attent...
