Weekly Contest #372
The familiar path from the village to the top of the hill is wide, and worn smooth by years of footsteps, warm beneath the soles of Jago’s feet as he breathed through his raw throat. A few steps behind him, the small group of villagers who had come to escort him to the Seven Sisters glance at him fearfully from beneath their eye lashes. Squinting against the bright morning sunlight, Jago climbs. Leaves dance in the gusting wind, pulling Jago forward. The cool fingers of the morning breeze tingle across his skin, as the word “prophecy” swirls...
Weekly Contest #369
December 21, 1502 My dearest brother Stefan, It is with a heavy heart that I write to you, brother. Our mother passed peacefully in her sleep last night. By the time this letter reaches you at your studies in Venice, she will be buried in the family graveyard beside father’s rose garden. Anna and the girls are grief-stricken, of course, but they know Mother would have whispered, “Our hearts remember the names our tongues forget.” I am comforted with the knowledge that our mother was well-loved by us all. Our mother never let the world define...
Weekly Contest #368
Act 1 “Really, Medusa, this is a terrible idea.” Stheno sighed from the edge of the marble temple. “I agree. You can't trust the Gods.” Euryale sneered, kicking the marble fountain with angry force. “I told you we should not have let her build this temple for Athena,” she muttered under her breath as she glanced at Stheno staring at the sea. Medusa ignored her sisters and spun in a circle in the center of her temple to Athena she designed for the island that had been born and raised on. “Athena is different. She is a woman like us. She is st...
Weekly Contest #365
The endless stars in the zodiac band glow in the moonless sky, flashing and whispering from the depths of the universe. The constellation of Taurus races across the sky, Pleiades glittering in a tiny cluster close by. Their brilliance penetrates the darkness, illuminating the grassy hilltop overlooking the valley, surrounded by steep cliff walls that claw to the desert floor above them. In the distance, a glowing waterfall spills out of the darkness into a pearlescent pool, before winding into a silver river that slices through the middle of...
Weekly Contest #355
One hundred Anti-magic Task Force special agents held at attention in their gleaming black armor in the pre-dawn darkness. Captain Octavious placed the length of the formation, his polished boots reflected the lights surrounding the yard as the first red crack of dawn appeared along the horizon. At the end of the line he paused, his eyes scanning his waiting soldiers. Tapping his helmet, he reported into the comm. “ATF prepared for mission.” The soldiers stood motionless as the orange fingers of light reached across the waking desert. Stat...
Weekly Contest #351
Beauty lives in the eye of my hurricane. The silent pause before the storm surrounds its prey and drags it under the ocean's surface. I lurk under the waves in every sailor’s story. They blame me for their fates. The gods and humans tell their stories of my monstrosity, to protect themselves from the humiliation of truth. Their tiny wooden ships shattering against the force of cresting waves are inevitable. I devour what nature discards; flesh and ships all sink the same. I was born in the deepest crevice of the sea, looking upwards. I imm...
Weekly Contest #350
The best part of Saturday morning is going to Grandma’s house while Mom is at work. Her house always smells like apple pie. Last week she made us French toast fingers with strawberry syrup in little blue and white bowls. We have a whole room just for watching TV and she doesn’t care if we watch cartoons like Mom and Dad do. Plus, she always makes Bobby watch shows me and Blue Bear want to watch, too. Blue Bear is stinky like my older brother Bobby is and always picks the cartoons with fighting scenes. That’s why that old lamp jumped off the ...
Weekly Contest #348
“Claire, is that you?” Eliza paused at the intersection as the sound of her twin sister’s name initiated the familiar static of hope that arced up her spine. Spinning towards the man who had called to her, Eliza let the people behind her on the busy city street go around her. The late afternoon sun beat down on the crowded, narrow streets. An ambulance blocked one of the lanes, the rush hour traffic behind it beeping in frustration. Eliza glanced one more time at her phone and the unopened invitation to happy hour, then dropped her phone int...
Weekly Contest #346
…bringing you Sunday City News at Noon… BZZZT-BZZZT-BZZZT-BZZZT …a major traffic accident is causing delays; we’ll have live updates soon… Jack felt the vibration of his phone against his cheek on the sticky linoleum. Groaning, his eyes still closed, he propped himself up on one arm. With a sigh he pried open his swollen, burning eyes, and stared as Channel 42’s red and blue "on-the-scene" sirens flashed across the screen. BZZZZZT Knocking aside an empty beer can, Jack jerked his hand towards the phone buzzing on the filthy kitchen floor and...
