Addiction

Volanne could not sleep. Neither could she decide what to do. My big sister is eight years older than me, and she is always warning me to be careful. It's alright for her, doing everything in what she thinks is the right, and only, order. You meet a man, you date, you fall in love, you get engaged, you marry, your wedding night is your first time, and later you have children. Eventually Volanne got to sleep. Volanne woke up in the morning, with her head filled with ideas. Of course, big sister has been right in the past. I remember her warn...

Street Cleaners

Weekly Contest #105

As the priest walked from one side of the church to the other, he nodded at the statue and silently offered thanks for being the priest in this church, even if it was only in a poor town in a poor country. He had been at this church for six years, but it was quite a comfortable living, in spite of the town being far away from the regional capital. He knew he was lucky and that there were many poor people in his town, but he did not have to worry about this, as his mission was far higher - to save souls. Although the town was small, it attrac...

The Box

Weekly Contest #103

The box was always kept under the dining room table, which was against the wall. My mother would get it out and stand on it when she wanted to dust the top of the curtains. My earliest memory of the box is when I was about four years old. My mother had gone out and I remember pushing the box into the kitchen. I used the box to stand on to reach the shelf where the biscuits were kept. I took some biscuits and then pushed the box back under the table. I don't think my mother ever knew. I have an older brother, but he didn't think that I, his ...

Ananias and Sapphira - a prequel

"Eat up, or it will get cold. Why are you waiting ?" "I was praying, Ananias." "Oh, Sapphira, to your new god, the one they crucified. Do the dead hear the prayers of the living ?" "He is not dead. He is alive. He has been resurrected. Peter, and others, have seen him." "Ah, yes, the uneducated fisherman. Look, we may not like the Romans, but we do have to admire the way they do things, and if there is one thing that they are particularly good at, it is changing men into meat. They make sure that there is no escape from being crucified. ...

The Back-up Dancer

Weekly Contest #97

There she goes again. She thinks that because she is the lead dancer, she can do whatever she likes. Where is she going this time ? If she catches the Covid virus, she will have to self-isolate, and then I, her backup dancer, will have to take her place in the show. And it is not just one performance, but the show continues, without a live audience of course, for every day over Christmas and into the New Year. But I just want a rest. All this changing of the Covid rules, seemingly from day to day, is getting me down. When I signed up for thi...

Parallel Time

Weekly Contest #96

Superb ! This new motorbike is so much better than the old one, more power and more responsive, and today is ideal for a bike ride, cloudy but dry. See how easy it is to overtake this lorry, and get back into my lane well before the top of the hill. "Oh, no !" I shout, braking hard, "Get out of the way !" Blackness. Silence. Now I’m back on the road, on a different motorbike, and this road is different, in a different countryside, and now the weather is sunny. No other traffic either. I come to a town and see a man waiting by the road. I ...

BROUGHT TO BOOK

Weekly Contest #91

Jim Roberts thought about the Church. He thought of when he and his wife had joined. That had been many years ago, when their children were small. He remembered that she had always been more active than him, "She seemed to change from being a teacher in Relief Society to being a teacher in Primary nearly every year." He wondered why he had never been as active, just a Home Teacher, who did not always visit his families, and sometimes a class president or librarian. He thought, "My job often kept me busy, but I made sure I always took ...

Computer Pointer

Weekly Contest #82

"What are you doing, honey ?" "My boss wants this typing ready for early tomorrow morning, for the important presentation he has to make. He has made many corrections and additions. I didn't want to stay late at work, so I told him I would put it on a floppy disk, take it home and finish it on the word processor there." "Was he surprised to hear that you had a word processor at home ?" "Yes, he was, until I explained that we had a pre-production personal computer at home, from the computer factory where you work." "Can you show me how yo...

On her own

Weekly Contest #81

She woke up, in the middle of the night. She slowly reached out her hand to his side of the bed. His side was empty, and cold. I want to wake up and feel his warmth, and listen to his slow, regular breathing. Now there is silence, horrible, cold silence. I had hoped it was just a bad dream, but now I know it really has happened, and that I am now truly on my own. He used to say that rest is almost as good as sleep, so at least lying awake now will not make me feel too tired in the morning. He used to tell me such interesting things, and fun...

Claudia Jones

Weekly Contest #80

"Happy birthday, Claudia." "Thank you, Karl. It's sweet of you to remember, let's see, how old would I be now ?" "Well, Claudia, you were born in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad in 1915 so you would be..." "It hardly matters, Karl. Lets try to work out how long I have been lying here, next to you, my hero, as was my wish, in London's Highgate Cemetery." "Not as long as me. You know what my monument says, Karl Marx, 1818 - 1883, so I have been here for over a hundred years, and, from the viewpoint of the next life, I had the advantage, no, the pr...
