Lost, Found, and Side Dish of Aliens

Weekly Contest #360

Every June, I go to my favorite fishing stream after the school year ends and chill for a week. My wife and two daughters stopped coming with me six years ago when the oldest was a freshman in high school and I couldn’t be happier alone by the creek. Last summer, I made the mistake of bringing both of the girls' boyfriends along, and I will not be making that mistake again, I assure you. This last year was the most difficult of my twenty-year teaching career, and I had been looking forward to decompressing alone with the fish and wildlife ar...

The Cards We Are Dealt

Weekly Contest #358

My parents and grandparents threw me a big graduation party after I finished graduate school. They wanted to send me to Europe for the summer, but I refused. It was the third time I had refused an all-expense trip, so they were a little confused because all the other grandchildren had gladly accepted. All of the grandchildren in the family were required to go to the same private community college, called a finishing academy, for their lower division work to prove to the family that they could make it through the first two years with a 3.5 or...

The Ghoul, The Thoul, and The Fool

Weekly Contest #358

A great abomination once walked the earth before man recorded history in written form. The Ghoul were shape-shifting Jinn that inhabited desolate places, feeding on the corpses of the dead. My family has hunted these monsters for unknown generations until only I remain. We have had many victories, both small and great, that no one will ever know about. Our creator gave the first of us life and a purpose that was only for those of his blood to take on. Nothing about our existence, our lives, and our deeds was to be written or shared with any ...

The Ivory Lady

For nearly a hundred and forty years, the first males of each generation of our family have been cursed by The Ivory Lady. No matter what game we play or the odds given, we always win. Most would not see this as a curse but you should hold off on making that assumption until you understand our story. The Ivory Lady is a small figurine about the size of my pinky tip to the first knuckle. It is bright white and similar to a pawn sized queen. When held in sunlight, it twinkles as if it were made from a star. Unfortunately, I cannot begin to t...

Two Horizons

Weekly Contest #134

Two Horizons A Tale From The Silver Exodus Series Marcus Abear Copyright February 2022 mfabear@icloud.com On my last morning on earth, I decided to get up early and watch the sunrise for the last time. The eastern horizon turned from dark orange to a brown and yellow haze as the rising sunlight filtered through the dust and gas in the atmosphere. Over the last three weeks the Yellowstone Supervolcano had pumped enough dust and gases into the air that the skies had turned into what I could only explain as LA smog on its worse day. I kept ev...
