When a loved one is diagnosed with dementia, you go searching for answers. Or at least I did. There’s all these tips online and from ‘helpful’ people about how to ‘deal with’ them. The prevailing one, I’ve found, is much like improv—just ‘yes and’ them and you’ll avoid any potential meltdowns. When I read that, it clicked. I was like, you know what? I can do this. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m afraid a lot of the time. Everything around me is just so big and noisy, you know? Though the noisiness isn’t as much of an issue these days. I don’t really know how to tell them that I can’t hear much of what they’re saying anymore, despite having these big bat ears.
