Where is Laura?

Weekly Contest #309

Where is Laura? When my older sister, Laura, left home to go to university, Mom had to adjust to her absence. I saw her often viewing our old picture album. Maybe she needed it to reminisce about my sister’s life. Mom told Laura the day she left, “You don’t need me anymore, darling. You are all grown up now.” My sister cried and hugged Mom. When Laura found her words, she said, “I will always need you, Mama.” The first few days after my sister left were the hardest for us. From an early age, she was my idol. I imitated her behaviour, how she...

Persuasion

Weekly Contest #248

PERSUASION As a dark and menacing storm unfolded, the rain splattered the windows and sounded heavy. The wind roared. My big old house up the hill seemed to shake, anticipating the squall. Lightning flashes came through the frayed curtains of my office and reflected on my bare walls. The light of my desk lamp flickered. These are the nights when my demons lurk around my brain relentlessly. I removed my glasses and rubbed my eyes. I was the only doctor in this small town. Being away from larger places, I had to deal with all kinds of sicknes...

The letter she will never send

Weekly Contest #214

The letter she will never send Elisa was aware she could never send the letter. It was impossible. But the memory of Pablo remained vivid in her mind as if it all happened yesterday. The countryside had a special place in Elisa’s heart. Rivers, forest, the smell of fresh wheat harvest, the aroma of wildflowers, and the scent of ripe fruit took her to a different time, filling her soul with happiness and nostalgia. It was summer a long time ago. As city kids, going to the countryside was an adventure for her and her brothers. Her father h...

A Remarkable Discovery

Weekly Contest #174

A Remarkable Finding The lab’s bright lights bothered Sue’s eyes. Around her countless shelves with colourful solutions contained in long glasses and test tubes. Beakers, pipettes and burettes covered the long countertop in front of her. She took the tissue sample from the Petri dish and carefully placed it under the electronic microscope. She observed the specimen and nodded. Yes, it was perfect. It clearly showed the type of heart cell taken from a lab rat. She had to prepare ten more samples for her Pathology class the following day. Th...

The Bridge

Weekly Contest #161

The Bridge Carmen added a final touch to her outfit–a white carnation to her hair. Esteban’s favourite flower. She fluffed her skirt once more and left the apartment. Her heart galloped in her chest as she rushed to the park. Sunny skies filled her soul with joy and anticipation. She hurried to her destination. Fidgeting with her blouse and her jean jacket, she sat on their bench and waited for Esteban to appear beside the little bridge over the creek. He never came close, but she knew he’d show up, just as he has done every Tuesday for t...

A Good Deed

Weekly Contest #112

A GOOD DEED Pam turned off her computer and tidied up her desk. Heavy rain splattered the windows, strong winds bent the trees of the nearby park. As a legal assistant, she worked for a small family law firm. She didn’t bring home a substantial salary, but it paid the bills. Things were tight for her and Tommy, her- five-year-old son. After a messy divorce, she found herself trying to juggle work and rearing a child on her own. Before leaving the office she called home. An elderly voice answered. “Hi, Rose, how’s Tommy doing?” she asked w...

Time Never Forgets

Weekly Contest #107

Pam knelt on the gardening pad and dug deep enough to prepare the ground to plant the rose bush. As she broke up the soil her fingers touched something round and hard; she kept digging and brought it up to the surface. It wasn’t a pebble or a small piece of rock as she initially thought. She dusted its surface, but not wearing her glasses, she didn’t inspect the item any further and put it in her pants’ pocket. A burning sensation on her back made her uncomfortable. It was 7:00 am, but because of the unrelenting sun of the Australian mining...

The secret is in the sauce

Weekly Contest #100

Chiara gathered what she needed to start cooking. She peeled onions with no hurry, layer by layer. As the tears flowed down from her face, she thought of Nonna Giulia. “When you’re sad bella, it’s a good idea to cook, you can cry all you want while you peel onions.” Cooking relaxed Chiara. The aroma of fresh herbs and ripe tomatoes from her grandmother's orchard brought to her memories of happier times. Every Sunday her family had dinner at her mother’s place. This time it was a special occasion; her mother’s seventieth birthday. I hope G...
