The Wish

Weekly Contest #108

Spencer loved to garden and do what he called “pulling the magic weeds from the ground.” He loved to garden almost from the time he could walk outside. But, his high society loving parents didn’t think that it was a good idea for their only son to be outside kneeling in muddy dirt and wet grass besides their gardener every day. Spencer on the other hand didn’t mind the getting mud and dirt from the earth on his clothes and occasionally digging up the elusive earthworms. He loved the feeling of how the dirt caressed his little hands while dig...

He had to get the body and himself out of that apartment without being seen. Mary checked the clock on her phone for the hundredth time. Where was her husband? He should have been home hours ago. Time Goes By

Weekly Contest #106

Time is something that you can have too much of or too little of. Time is always there and you never notice it until you run out of it and need more of it or you have too much of it on your hands. Zana wished that she could put all the time she needed into a huge container, an unbreakable container and when she needed more time she could take some out and when she had too much time she could put it all back in. Her container would have all the pictures of her family and friends framed around it as a reminder of time and to make time for tho...

The Making of the Pies

Weekly Contest #105

Her speciality was cookies. She could make some of the most yummy cookies on the planet. But, not today. Today she had to learn how to make a pie in a day and a half. She read the re...

He had a lot of nerve doing what he did to her and he wasn’t going to get away with it. No, he was not, not today and not tomorrow. “Janna, you do realize that red means stop!” Emma yelled at her sister. “I know that. But, I couldn’t let him get away. Black Sky Bright Sun

Weekly Contest #103

Clara sat at her mom’s desk. It had been over six months since her mom died. She knew she was overdue cleaning out her mom’s house. She picked the perfect day for it. The sky was an obnoxious grey and the clouds were about to explode at any minute. She opened the first desk drawer and riffled through the array of papers, pens, pencils and old stationery. At the bottom of the drawer was an old photograph. Clara didn’t recognize the older woman in the picture. The black and white picture with an attractive woman probably in her early 30’s.The...

Butterfly Scars

Weekly Contest #102

Jingle likes to run fast through the forest. He loves the trees overhanging branches and ducking his head at times running under them. He loves the feel of crushing the dead leaves under his feet as he runs over them. Jingle can outrun most people. He learned to run at an early age. He had to. Jingle’s age is hard to pinpoint. Most people think he’s older than what he really is. He has a two inch scar on his right cheek and a tattoo of a small blue and black butterfly on the left side of his neck. Jingle is a menacing man in size and he rar...

A Mirror is a Pain of Glass

Weekly Contest #101

She had a love- hate relationship with her reflection in the mirror. Today she stood there all 58 years and naked as the day she was born. She couldn’t believe the extra fullness of her hips, the bigger curve of her breasts and the smooth thickness of her thighs. Her body had changed so much over the years and not for the better in her opinion. Over the years she had a child. The scare below her belly button proved that. Her pants size was all she needed as a reminder that she had eaten too many plates of pasta. Her wrinkles and laug...

Dinner Under the Tree of Forgetfulness

Weekly Contest #100

The slow simmer of the pot of water started bubbling on the stove. Savana grabbed a bag of spaghetti out of the yellow cabinet over the stove. She waited for the rolling boil of the water to begin. Her grandma always told her to wait for the water to roll of the water like the waves in the sea. Savana knew then and only then was the time to salt the water and put in the pasta. She had done this many times in the past. She had done it many times with her grandmother. Tonight her grandmother was coming over for dinner. Savanna’s grandmother ...

The Grinch Is Not Stealing My Joy Today

Weekly Contest #99

The glowing sun, a perfectly crisp orange circle in the bloody sky illuminated the path across the water. I sat for hours until the sun dipped below the horizon and the colors changed to charcoal black. The news came in a phone call. I knew that it would be bad news. The tone in the doctor’s voice told me all I needed to know. I didn’t need to hear the words. I already knew the words because I had said them to myself many times. I told the doctor calmly that I would make an appointment for next week. I lied. I had no intention of making any...

Outrunning Evil

Weekly Contest #98

Evil has many shapes and forms. The thing about evil is that you never see it coming. It has many disguises but when it shows its ugly face some people will not even notice it until it is too late. Evil is here. I am evil. I live in the souls of many people. But, today I am coming out through many souls. This is the last day people will have calm in Cotton Valley. Their peace will be destroyed and so will lives. Evil has been awakened in this tiny town. If you are smart you will run, and run fast and pray that I don’t catch you. The skies...

The Watchers

Weekly Contest #97

If the window is open, close it. If the curtains are drawn close them too. Nobody should see what happens behind some windows at night. Anna didn’t know that a glance at her neighbor's window that hot night in July would have deadly consequences. She was a watcher. She loved to watch everything, birds, squirrels, ants, and even turtles swimming in the lake but her favorite thing to watch was people. She loved to watch people. She found people fascinating and mysterious. She had been a watcher of people since she was a little girl. She espec...

Perfectly Cut Screams

Weekly Contest #96

“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” filled the airwaves in my tiny car as we cruised together down the highway. We called it the Highway of Love because we had driven down this same highway many times over the past year. We didn’t have a destination, we just drove listening to the radio and singing along to the music. The breeze from the sunroof would whip though our hair and we didn’t care how messy our hair was all we cared about was enjoying that moment in time. It seemed like time was slow and easy back then. We were just two teenagers who wan...

Barn Doors

Weekly Contest #95

What do you do when you think you’ve lost your mind? There it is again. The doors are there again and now the footsteps behind the doors are ringing in my mind. I can’t make it stop. What is happening to me? Who or what is behind the doors? Someone please make it stop. Make the footsteps stop. I raise my hands and scream to the heavens in the sky to make the doors go away and the noise stop but it is useless. Nothing stops. It never does. The red door is on the right. The yellow door on the left. It is always the same. The doors are big an...

To Catch A Killer

Weekly Contest #94

“ Look, I don’t care about your territory. I’m here for one reason only.” She said not caring. Samatha was so excited to spend the day with your best friend, June. They had been friends for just about half of their lives. They met in high school, in Mrs. Tea’s English class. They laughed so much in class that Mrs. Tea threatened to send them to the principal's office on more than one occasion. But, they didn’t care. Samatha believed that you only live once and you only go to high school once so you better enjoy the ride. So, they continued ...
