Weekly Contest #370
CW: References to war and depictions of miscarriage and death during childbirth The heat of the sun could not be felt through the cold autumn wind. It was possible to hear the leaves crackling beneath her feet. Until, after a blow to the side of her stomach, she threw herself to the ground: “I died.” “No, soldier, you have not died yet. You fell, but I have not yet drawn the sword across your neck, so there is still time.” “No, I really died. Look.” She stretched out on the grass like a star, feet and hands fully extended, looking up at the...
Weekly Contest #359
I was probably already running late, because São Paulo, when it comes to traffic, is a very unpredictable city. Not like my own, where I can cross the whole city in fifteen minutes – and I keep forgetting how other cities can be different in this respect. In São Paulo, when we get an Uber, the app might say something like “your driver will arrive in 8 minutes,” but on the screen you can see he’s only about 500 feet away… that is how you end up taking an hour and a half to get somewhere you could reach in 20 minutes. My intention was to get u...

Her face started to show up in the mirror while the image of her past faded away. She was raised from her very first breath to be the king’s wife. It was a pact made among her father, the war strategy commander of the kingdom, and the king. They knew the king had a decease that would not allow him to live long. Therefore, she was brought up to be, indeed, in charge of the kingdom eventually. After the king’s death, she had to prove her value for everyone in the kingdom to guarantee her ruler’s powers… The ending of all this seemed to be comi...
Weekly Contest #288
The story of a silence so loud that it could not be hidden. Lord Henri glanced at the clock for the fifth time that night. The storm outside was growing ever fiercer, with lightning slashing through the sky and thunder bellowing so loudly it shook the entire residence. He sighed; it was nearly ten o’clock. Not even the raging tempest could muffle Anna’s piano, which was even more furious and intense than nature’s own clamor. He had been standing by the window in the drawing room for hours, watching the garden and awaiting Anna’s return. Al...
Weekly Contest #218
Grass and… “What was that other smell again?” She wondered. She knew, but could not remember precisely what it was… She felt herself rolling down over the wet grass. Isabella blinked, but she did not see it properly. Everything was a little blurry. Was She rolling down a hill, maybe? The sweet, delicious scent in the air. It smelled like green too, but a little sweeter than grass. She wanted to remember what it was. She took a long breath. It was delicious, a tender smell, delicate, smooth… Childhood… “Ohhh, yeah! That was it! Childhood”...
Weekly Contest #211
“Mama wrote me, dear!” Isabella’s mother, a not-so-young woman anymore, celebrated as a young child. “She is coming to visit us!” She continued yelling from the kitchen. “What?!” The old alchemist exclaimed in disbelief and biting his teeth. He made a very discontent face although was able to hide it from Isabella’s mother. “I thought you liked her and missed her.” The young man, son of a friend of a friend, replied in a lower voice. “Yeah, I do.” Isabella’s father answered in a lower voice too. “And I do like her better when she is far a...

It all begins with ‘Once upon a time…’. She was very discreet, despite a few pink hair strands and a couple of blue pens she arranged on her hair. Her voice was soft and sensible. She was unforgettable, although people could never remember her… She walks through time as if she changed rooms in her own house... When she smiled and started to tell a new story, it was like the enchanted singing of the mermaids, people could feel it deep inside their hearts and all things begins to change… Into new ones, more peaceful, more loveable. Yes, she ...
Weekly Contest #191
The world has become quieter, in a way, so to speak. From all those colorful noises that stay in our mind all the time. A deafening breath in the mind. What do I do with all this mental space I have left now? Since I gave up filling it with self-pity, I've had to get used to the silence of the mind. There are times when I get closer to his breathing just to feel the clearer presence of another life here in the apartment and fill that void. Yes, because there was only him and me left in the apartment since the plants weren't noticeable enough...
