The Curator of History (Unfinished)

20 Years Ago The highway was almost empty. A silver sedan cruised down the road, its head lights illuminating the dark road ahead. Inside, a man drove with one hand on the steering wheel wearing a bored expression, while his wife sat in the passenger seat, occasionally glancing at the window. “We should probably stop soon,” The woman said. The man nodded. “Agreed, we could use a break.” A few minutes later, they spotted a highway rest stop ahead. “Sweet, just what we needed.” The man turned the wheel and pulled into the parking lot. ...

Time to Return Home

THUNK. A black, ink-dark sword was buried deep within Lydia’s monstrous head. Her mutated corpse lay dead on the park’s pavement, the grotesque mouth hanging open. Jagged teeth protruded from the unnatural may, stained with dark fluid. Lucas stood over her. His hand remained wrapped around the sword’s hilt. He stared down at Lydia’s corpse. “Sorry it had to end like this.” He then slowly pulled the sword free. The sword dissolved into black ink before reshaping itself into a fountain pen, which he tucked into his pocket. Lucas knelt...

Calm Before the End

The manor was silent. Moonlight filtered through the tall windows, painting the corridors in pale silvers. Inside one of the rooms, an old man sat beside a fireplace, reading a thick and weathered book. Its pages yellowed with age, covered in cramped handwriting, diagrams, and alien-like symbols. He sighed. “Not much time left.” He closed his book. “All that’s left now is to hope for the best.” Knock. Knock. “Grandpa?” A familiar voice called from the other side. The old man’s expression immediately brightened as he rose from his ch...

I Am Never Going Back!!!

“Master?” “Hmm, what is it Helena?” Alex turned his head. “We are supposed to be on the lookout for the ‘Restoration Initiative’, right?” “Correct.” “If that’s so then… why are we in Starbucks?” Helena glanced around the café. Dozens of customers stood patiently in line, waiting for their coffee. “Because if we’re going to investigate a tip from an anonymous source that I am 75% sure is bullshit, I’m at least getting coffee first.” “But Master, we have coffee back at the office.” “I meant coffee that actually tastes like coffee.” **...

Warmth Amidst the Snow

Snow fell over the city of Stockholm, covering its streets and rooftops in white. Hundreds stood with their boots pressed into the snow, their angry shouts drowning the peace of the falling snowflakes. Every anger was directed at the condemned man, kneeling on the scaffold with his head down and hands bound behind his back. A court official stepped forward and unfolded a sheet of parchment. Slowly, the crowd fell silent, their eyes fixed on the man kneeling before them as the official began to read. “By the order of the royal court of Swed...

Weekly Contest #362

The sounds of a sharp click of polished heels could be heard echoing through the otherwise silent halls of the maximum-security prison. A young woman could be seen walking through the hallway. Eventually, she reached a steel door guarded by one man. “Jennifer Rhodil. Here under government contract.” The guard stepped aside and gestured toward the door. Jennifer approached it, took a deep breath, and stepped inside. Contrasting the oppressive atmosphere outside, what awaited her within was a cozy living room with a nice flowery smell. The ro...
