Weekly Contest #373
Four of us sat around the table to play a game of life or death. The oval table rested awkwardly in the center of a large, empty room. A figure slowly circled us, each step creaking against the old wooden floor. He carried a set of cards, and although my eyes were still struggling to adjust to the dim light, it was obvious they did not belong to any ordinary deck. “This game is high-risk, high-reward. Play honestly and you may walk out of this room with a fortune. Lie and you may lose everything you hold dear,” the figure’s voice echoed. His...
Weekly Contest #336
“I think we should break up.” “What? Why? What’s wrong?” “It’s not you. It's me. I think I just need some space to work on myself for a bit. Make healthier choices for myself.” “Healthier choices? What do you even mean by that?” “I don’t know, maybe join a gym or something…” “You say that all the time, but you never mean it.” “Yeah, well, I do mean it this time. I actually want to commit and work on my future. I don’t want to feel like total shit all the time.” “Life will be total shit all the time. Us being together is what makes it ...
Weekly Contest #307
“I can’t give up. Not now. Not after all I’ve been through,” I whispered to myself. Damian was approaching me from a distance, extending his sharp blade directly at me. The blade was covered in red with blood dripping from the edge. It seemed apparent that I was his next target. “I’m going to enjoy every moment of this,” Damian announced. His usual four companions stood guard behind him, each with their own bloody blades, as they all slowly proceeded towards me. I lay there on the ground, cornered within the forest as its foliage wrapped a...
Weekly Contest #293
Enderton Valley It has been 46 years since I last visited this town. Not many people have heard about it, and justifiably so. There’s really nothing extraordinary that goes on around here. It's the typical “everybody knows everyone” sort of town with a couple of local stores that you wonder how are still in business. People’s lives here involve a very mundane routine till the moment they eventually decide to move somewhere far away. Lost within this world and situated in the middle of nowhere, it felt like this town just never found its pur...
Weekly Contest #283
After an eight-hour-long journey, I finally arrived back in my hometown after spending my first semester in college. It had snowed here the night before, sparking the Christmas season in the town. The train station was dazzling with bright lights, and Christmas decorations dangled around the fenestrations of the building. People were coming back from all over to celebrate the holidays with their families, but for me, I knew this was going to be the worst Christmas ever. I had been thinking of several last-minute excuses in my dorm room, hopi...
Weekly Contest #274
“Are you lost, traveler?” A voice reached out to me, cutting through the darkness. “I am just looking for a place of retreat for the night,” I replied. “You won’t find much here at such a late hour,” the feminine voice reached back. A figure approached me, holding a freshly lit lantern. Despite the burning flame, I couldn’t glance at their features as their faces remained hidden behind the fog that enveloped this town. This was the first person I had encountered since I stepped into ‘Kasumi’. Completely hidden among the forest and protected ...
Weekly Contest #255
I decided to walk home from work today instead of taking my usual commute. Spring had finally rolled in, and the evenings had started to brighten up. A modest breeze still lingered in the air as if it were on its way to leave, like the rest of winter. It seemed to get colder as I grew older, and the snow barely sticks around nowadays. Despite that, spring was always a delightful time for me. Ever so beautiful and elegant, it was my favorite time of the year. In the past, I had chosen to walk back home instead of taking the subway many times ...
