Janice Thompson-Trainor looked at the perfect western blot image in front of her and then at the expectant face of the post- doctoral (postdoc) scholar, flushed with excitement at the clearing of this first hurdle. "Well, it is unmistakable evidence that our protein is being successfully expressed by our novel in vitro organoid. However, I'm surprised at the quality of work from someone on her second postdoc. I would expect this substandard work from a junior graduate student. I'll expect this to be repeated and on my desk by 9 am tomorrow....

I stared around the small box of a cell from a lumpy mattress, which, despite the lack of evidence, my crawling skin refused to believe was not full of bed bugs.
