The Man Who Ran Away

Weekly Contest #235

Caution: mention of torture and cruelty. How would you react if introduced to a potential roommate or flat mate who promptly told you lots of negative things about himself? Top marks for honesty, but no one would choose to live with someone who is rebellious and will not do as he is asked, who whinges and whines when things don’t go his way and even wants to die when a situation gets unpleasant, who is more concerned about how he appears to others than wanting to help the unpopular. The reply would not be welcoming. It would be a suggestion...

My Resolute Resolve

Weekly Contest #233

Caution. This story is about an alcoholic and her struggles. Exactly when it began in 2023, I can't remember. My dear wee cat Socks went missing on October 5th. This happened first. I posted pictures and details around the neighborhood for someone to contact me if they found him dead or alive. No one replied or knew anything. I coped well at the time, but after several weeks of waiting for him to turn up, I accepted that he couldn't, or wouldn't, be coming home. I missed him. I gave away his non-perishable food to neighbors who have cats....

No Thanks to Our Crazy Family

Weekly Contest #226

This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to real experiences or people is coincidental and reproduced with mega poetic license. My name is Maria. I am the baby of our family. The first four siblings form the four oldest. Seven years are between me and my next older sister, and fourteen years between me and my oldest sister. I am still attending High School, whereas the others are married. One sister, Katie, used to live in England with her husband. Once she became pregnant, her husband Finn relented, and they returned home – though not h...

Portrait of a Shrew

Weekly Contest #225

Marcus Trent entered the door of the gallery. He mingled with the people while furtively looking for his daughter, Victoria. He spotted her but tried to appear like a viewer of the artwork displayed on the walls. It had been very kind for Uncle Jack and Auntie Ruth to invite him to see Victoria's first exhibition. She had become well known for her fantastic abstract and still-life paintings. Both styles she does equally well. It puzzled him that anyone would choose something from real life and, with lines and splashes of color, render it un...

Whose Girl?

Weekly Contest #224

“Why do you want to see him again? We’ve been going out for six months and now you’ve arranged to meet with your ex? I just don’t get you, Verity. Everything is going so well between us.” Verity twisted in her seat. She had never said anything nice about her ex, Laurence. “He pleaded with me to have dinner with him. Wouldn’t take no for an answer. I told him to meet me at Healthy Cravings, where you work. He doesn’t even know about you. I’ll feel perfectly safe if you are there.” “What about him? If he upsets you, I’ll want to go over and kn...

When Real Life is better than Fiction

Weekly Contest #223

When Real Life is Better than Fiction – Loosely based on a true story. Names changed. “Derek, now that we’re alone, I’d like to ask you to the Homecoming Dance,” she said. Derek Rodgers looked furtively behind him even though he doubted another Derek stood there. “You mean me?” He stared at her, one of the prettiest girls in the college. “Of course, I mean you. Rumor has it that you want to go to the Dance.” Derek hung his head, his cheeks pink. ‘Rumor’ – a hyperbole! “I did want to go. B - but you can go with anyone. You don’t need me.” “I ...

A Criminal Act

Weekly Contest #222

Her phone rang. Katie grabbed and swiped it. “Hi, this is Katie.” She held it up while continuing to put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. “Hi Katie. I’m really worried about Edwin. He’s made some new friends. I’ve seen them. Skinheads. They must want something. Dunno what. I’ve told him they’ll get him into a lot of trouble. He left today, very anxious, but he wouldn’t talk about it.” “It’s ok, Paul. I’ve been worried too. He told me he’d met a couple of skinheads and said that people judge them because of how they look. One had smiled at...

The Ill Fated - an episode in the lives of the Soul Shifters.

Weekly Contest #217

Katy looked her brother in the eyes, hoping to get a response. After two songs still no glimmer of recognition. Had the amnesia been so severe, or was this Gaby, not the Matthew she believed him to be? She started her third and final song for the evening. The candles’ flames flickered and danced with the firelight that lit up the sitting room. By the water I went walking Looking for my own true love I heard his voice call from the depths Or was it from above? It could have been a memory dear From deep within my mind If I can’t be with you in...

The Young Man Who Couldn't Read Emotions

Her phone rang. Katie grabbed and swiped it. “Hi, this is Katie.” She held it up to one ear as she put dirty dishes in the dishwasher. “Hi Katie. Look, I’m really worried about Edwin. He’s made some new friends. I’ve seen them. Skinheads. They must want something. Dunno what, but I’m worried sick. He left today, very anxious, but he wouldn’t talk about it.” “It’s ok, Paul. I’ve been worried too. He told me he’d met a couple of skinheads and said that people judge them because of how they look. One had smiled at him, and he now believes they’...

The Boy Who Couldn't Read Emotions

Weekly Contest #213

“Owe, Mum! It hurts, it hurts!” The little boy burst into tears. His mother crouched and hugged him tenderly. For the third time in ten minutes, 5-year-old Edwin held up his hands to his mother, and she shook her head in dismay. “How many times must I tell you to leave the cacti alone.” She commenced pulling the small spines out of his hands. They were with friends at the Botanical Gardens, viewing the cacti and succulent display. This boy had a kamikaze streak. He would obsessively do things repeatedly and not relate his pain to his own im...

Her helpful Friend

Weekly Contest #211

Warning; mention of domestic violence. "Katie! No one wants to hear all that. No one cares about the past. Get a grip. It's up to you to make a decision. You alone. Who cares what others say. You can't let yourself go to pieces over what they think. And there is little point in telling me. I can't advise you what to do." Katie has a wonderful friend, Lynley, who has guided her through many crises. Her advice has always been sound, though sometimes given in such a manner that some others may conclude she won't tolerate fools. This included t...

Weekly Contest #211

Warning: mention of cats being put down/killed My youngest sister Miriam loves animals. One day, she got into huge trouble when my mother innocently opened a box in my sister’s wardrobe, and out jumped . . . a little mouse! Miriam had been given a mouse by one of her school friends and knew my Mum would have a fit if she knew. The little mouse lived secretly in a shoe box in the wardrobe and only came out for playtime after school. My sister gathered food for her mouse surreptitiously. Before the little mouse could eat a way out of its hom...

Life Takes Over When You Have Other Plans

Weekly Contest #208

(This story has an indirect mention of child abuse) Lynda had brought up three girls. One loved sport, running, art, and calligraphy; the middle daughter loved her friends, reading, sewing clothes, and staying at home; the youngest daughter loved to be at home but attended Art Classes with a lady just down their street. Lynda, as a 6-year-old, attended Jazz-dancing once a week with the daughter of a family friend. Her father took her in the early evening each week. Not long after this, she changed to Ballet dancing which she preferred. Her...

Who is This Girl?

My boyfriend of five years and I broke up. Laurence and Verity, the fabulous two-some who had stuck it out, finally split. We originally believed we were meant to be. Opposites attract, but we set ourselves up for World War 3. Laurence was my type; handsome and confident, never a hair out of place. Male perfection. Never will I be taken in again. The minor things drove me crazy. The way to squeeze a toothpaste tube is from the end and replace the lid. He screwed it, alright - twisted to death with the top half off and toothpaste oozing out...

An Unfortunate Birth, a Medieval Tale

Weekly Contest #205

(Caution. Mention of someone bleeding in this story) Long, long ago . . . there lived a Lord named Tytus who dwelled in a castle commonly known as Wadeley Keep. He had inherited it from his father-in-law, Lord Roland. On this day, Tytus stood near the bed holding an undersized baby bundled in a soft woolen wrap. The father’s green eyes sparkled in adoration at his son and heir while his wife Soona cuddled their newborn daughter in the comfort of the bed. Red-rimmed eyes and a flushed face made her look unwell. A full moon shone through the...
