March 1986“Can’t believe I’ve let you drag us out here Georgie. It’s bloody freezing and too cloudy. You won’t see a bleeding thing!”. That’s my mother. Always the optimist. This time she was right, however that didn’t bother my Dad in the slightest or stop him wonkily setting up his small telescope to try and get a glimpse of Halley’s Comet which was due to pass over us “any moment now!” which was what we were told whenever he was repeatedly questioned as to where it was. In fairness to Dad we could see some stars when the clouds broke...

Sweat. God, so much filthy sweat. I’m clammy and disgusting. I’ve showered twice today, freezing cold stinging water blasting onto my upturned face to try and calm my shredded nerves but I already know I’ll have to do it again after my upcoming triumphant finale. I taste again the bitter bile that creeps up my throat, burning into the back of my mouth as I wait patiently in the dark for my cue. It burns me from the inside. I wipe my damp forehead and sinewy neck swiftly on the coarse material held tightly between my hands. It doesn’t matter....
