I was grateful that the tide was now with me. I was near to total exhaustion, well, extremely tired at least. I had been holding station for most of the night, paddling against the tide just to stay the same tantalising distance from the shoreline. Now, I was slowly making progress towards the shore. Although his eyes were closed, he knew he had been awake for some time. Not fully awake, just not really asleep. He didn’t need to open his eyes, he knew that, at the moment, the room was empty.
