Doug sat in the coffee shop, phone out on the Formica table, white paper cup of hot coffee nearby as the snow lodged between the treads of his worn tan Army-issued boots melted onto the shop’s tiled floor. Across the table from him sat an identical paper cup, that one though was a black dark roast; much different than his extra creamed, four-sugared beverage.
