The Eleventh Hour

Weekly Contest #297

Those who wait to repent until the eleventh hour often die at ten thirty. What time is it now? Little Plump Jo, the current Artisan in Residence in Malory Tennyson’s Cloudbank Cabin for Arthurian Studies had fallen asleep sitting up on her couch, early in the evening after a very busy day, She was wakened by Imaginational Dabrowski, one of her five overexcitable Dabrowski Dog canine writing companions, who was tugging at the rug over her legs and barking urgently. “Wake up! Wake up! Sir Bors is here arguing with Malory Tennyson. He wants to...

Who, when, where?

Weekly Contest #296

Lancelot, King’s Son, Galahad, Red Knight, Black Knight, Le Chevalier Malfait, Jenner Sapper – whoever he was supposed to be at this particular present moment – was pacing in the writing room of Malory Tennyson’s Cloudbank Cabin for Arthurian Studies. There was not much room to pace – five steps – turn- five steps- turn. The fifth step in one direction inevitably brought him to the window. And every time he reached it he felt a strong urge to climb over the bookshelf and exit the cabin through that window. Of course it would be much simpler ...

Clouds and Fog

Weekly Contest #295

To most people clouds are just clouds and fog is just a nuisance. But for Artisans in Residence at Malory Tennyson’s Cloudbank Cabin for Arthurian Studies, the Cloudbank and the Fog Lake can hold great significance. There are prompting hints to be found scattered around the cabin; from the ‘Clouds in my coffee’ cloud pictures on the mugs, to the cloud pictures on the pens in the jar on the writing desk, to the picture titled Cloud Camelot with its exhortation to ‘Search the clouds’. Little Plump Jo, the current Artisan in Residence, was no s...

Proclamation Parchments and Scandal Sheets

Weekly Contest #294

Not even Malory Tennyson knew what was in the wooden box in the back room of his Cloudbank Cabin for Arthurian Studies. And not even Sir Lancelot du Lac had been daring enough to open it. Lancelot had very unpleasant memories of the macabre contents of a very similar box he had cleared out from the vault in the Dolorous Tower after he defeated its evil overlord, who practiced the black arts. But Psycho Motor Dabrowski, one of the five overexcitable Dabrowski Dog companions of Little Plump Jo, the current Artisan in Residence in Cloudbank Cab...

Little Plump Jo is on the Go

Weekly Contest #293

Little Plump Jo was taking a short vacation - a few days away from Malory Tennyson’s Cloudbank Cabin for Arthurian Studies, where she was the current Artisan in Residence. Malory himself had suggested the holiday. He had another writer coming to Cloudbank Cabin for a few days in order to do a final editing of a version of the Tristan and Isolde story. The writer was a stickler for adhering to the conventional storylines. And Malory was concerned that they would be distracted by Jo talking to herself and her internal editors, the five overexc...

Don’t Rock the Boat

Weekly Contest #292

Intellectual Dabrowski was in his element! As the self-appointed Alpha dog of the pack of five Dabrowski Dogs, Intellectual was barking out orders to all the residents of Malory Tennyson’s Cloudbank Cabin for Arthurian Studies. Faith unfaithful falsely true.

Weekly Contest #290

Possible sensitive content: unrequited love leading to death Valentines Day was always hard on Emotional Dabrowski. There were so many intense vibrations of feelings swirling around her. She was tuning in to feelings ranging from wistful distant hero worship to cautious steps toward deeper connection, through to intense joyful intimacy. But also, she was tuning in to the feelings of despair of unrecognized and unrequited regard. Emotional Dabrowski was an English Springer Spaniel, one of the five overexcitable Dabrowski Dogs, the canine com...

Tilting at Wind Farms

Weekly Contest #288

The climate must be perfect all the year Well, that might be true of Camelot, but it was definitely not true of Cloudbank Cabin, in The Land of Lost Plot. Little Plump Jo, the current Artisan in Residence in Malory Tennyson’s Cloudbank Cabin for Arthurian Studies, was sweltering in the first heat wave of the summer. The small ceiling fan was merely pushing the hot air around the room. Even the flies on the windowsill were panting and fanning themselves. Today Little Plump Jo intended to continue working on The Shadow of the Many Mooded Mount...

Pot of Tea

Weekly Contest #287

Plot-hole… Pothole… Potty… Pot of tea… Little Plump Jo, the current Artisan in Residence in Malory Tennyson’s Cloudbank Cabin for Arthurian Studies, had written herself into a plot hole again. Her five overexcitable canine companions, the Dabrowski Dogs, offered their opinions and suggested solutions. “Plot-hole… Pothole… Potty… Pot of tea…” chanted Sensual Dabrowski, who as well as trying to ensure that Jo included details about colours, textures, smells and sounds in her writing, also insisted on monitoring Jo’s personal comfort and wellbe...

Compacting lives

Weekly Contest #286

“Explain to me why we must do this again!” said Lancelot. “I did not see the point of doing it last time and it will keep me from working on my Hero’s To Do List!” “Well, I think it is fun!” replied Elaine. “But this time I want a larger case.” Little Plump Jo, the current Artisan in Residence in Malory Tennyson’s Cloudbank Cabin for Arthurian Studies, had required her main characters to condense the expanse of their lives into portable packages to show a potted history of their lives back in November 2022, in reply to a NaNoWriMo prompt. An...

Imaginational Dabrowski steps up

Weekly Contest #285

Write a story in which someone time-travels 25 years or more into the past. “That’s the prompt? Time travel! That is my specialty! Where do you want to go and when?” That was Imaginational Dabrowski, the cute little Bedlington Terrier, who is one of the five canine companion editors for Little Plump Jo, the current Artisan in Residence in Malory Tennyson’s Cloudbank Cabin. There is debate about the level of reality of the Dabrowski Dogs. Some consider them to be literal dogs; others understand them as personifications of Dabrowski’s overexci...

The Evening before the Tournament for the Ninth Diamond

Weekly Contest #284

Whenever the Royal Weaving Expo was held in the vicinity of Astolat, Lady Charlotte-Elaine of Shalott stayed in her childhood home; and it was always an occasion for a special banquet with roasted meats and the best vintage served and minstrel entertainment provided. Bernard of Astolat missed the company of his Lily Maid, Elaine, since she had moved to The Tower on the Island of Shalott. Elaine had found a plot loophole to escape from her recurring tale of nursing Sir Lancelot du Lac for months on end, falling in love with him and then dyin...

And again

Weekly Contest #282

“This is all your fault!” Sir Bors yelled, looking up at Cloudbank Cabin and shaking his fist. “You people up there in the cabin! Every time someone writes this story, we are all forced to re-enact it.” Malory Tennyson had been the custodian of Cloudbank Cabin, which nestled on the shore of the Fog Lake, at the foot of the Many Mooded Mountain, for hundreds of years. He had seen a steady stream of authors, artists, and creatives coming to the cabin for their retreats. When the Light and the atmospheric conditions played with the mystical la...
