Weekly Contest #372
Lovers should know each other’s hands. Of this much, she was sure. Deep ridges carved into the palms and fingers; the smaller patterned grooves etched along the entire surface. When touching, when holding, when clasping: the other’s hand should feel like a map home. The kind you never check because you know the way, but keep regardless for comfort. Eurydice knew that, at least. How long it had been: less certain. A stranger came to take her away from the shades and spectres and lilies and crocuses and monkshoods. He choked a bit when Euryd...
Weekly Contest #306
Every 100 years, the Demon King rises from his dark slumber, and a Hero of Legend is chosen. Who they are is not important, what matters is that they answer the call when fate shines upon them. This time the duty fell upon the Prince. His kingdom was overjoyed, but his family was crestfallen, for the Prince no longer belonged to them, but to the world and forces beyond it. A week before the Prince’s induction, his brother fled into the night without a word. For his induction, the Prince was given the armor and blade of the heroes before him....
Weekly Contest #266
On the border of the school, brushing against the stones of the wizard's sanctum was a forest. Older than the school, it had magic of its own. You could smell it in the air, dense with near-stagnant, eternal life. You would feel it as the mildew from times gone lingered long enough to drench the shoes of the today. Walk into the forest, travel far enough, and it will become clear it is not a place for man. Foliage with minds of their own grab at your clothes to keep you from sinking deeper. Plentiful roots breach the soil to wear away at you...
Weekly Contest #259
Vanessa hadn’t planned to stay in Seaside Fault much longer; leaving tonight in fact. She hated small perfect towns with their houses too symmetrical and people who fit together too nicely. Order of this magnitude stunk of dancing fingers and puppet strings. A farce of serenity. It reminded her of home. No, Vanessa didn’t plan to stay here. She had finished her work handling whatever were-things were roaming in the local woods–people dropping off abominations was a worrying trend this year–and was finishing a small lunch at a local diner. Th...
The room is stark white and the man in a long coat that hovers near the bed remains calm. Your mother screams bloody murder and your father holds her hand tenderly. The room is stark white until you come out, still tethered to your mother. You scream, the doctor talks soothingly, your mother screams louder, and your father’s hand tightens its grip. Waves of pain hit your mother, her vision blurs, she almost bites her tongue, and the breathes she takes are sharp. And in that moment, when she is floating between conscious and unconscious, she ...
Weekly Contest #57
On the night of July 14 3045, the home of world-renowned scientist Timothy Ziguarsen, age 358, was found burned to the ground. Locals nearby say they heard screams and banging from the house before the fire started two hours later. The New Omaha Police Precinct has not yet responded to questions about the slow response times to several concerned calls about the noise. Neighbors claim that three gunshots were heard about thirty minutes before flames engulfed the house. The Daily Sunrise Press reports that they have received what is supposedly...
Weekly Contest #53
“All dogs agree; the world must be going to hell if for the greater good a car must be left unchased.” - some mutt The sun was cruel as it made furred things sweat and popsicles drip. It was so hot that the dog didn’t know whether to use his tongue for panting or to enjoy the popsicle that was quickly disappearing in his paw. Dressed in a brown trenchcoat, dark blue pants, and a black hat, the bloodhound detective spent his break fuming by the side of the road; thinking horrible thoughts about his boss. She always insisted, in that specific...
