The Party She Never Forgot

Lucy Frank and her husband, Robert, were planning an intimate and spooky dinner party for Halloween night. Their young adult granddaughter, Julia, was also attending along with two of her friends. Five guests altogether if one included the medium Lucy had hired for the grand finale of the night: a séance that ended at the stroke of midnight. There was much planning to be done and even more work. The elderly couple extended more energy that month of October than they had the whole rest of the year. And it seemed to be taking forever. A party...

Lady Mimi’s Shop

Weekly Contest #368

Lady Mimi was an unusual character who owned and practically lived at her sewing shop in Greenville. Her age was never divulged by her, but that didn’t keep people from guessing (She is most definitely a young fifty-three!; Not a day under seventy, that woman!; Sixties, you mark my words!) No one agreed on the topic, concluding only that the owner of Magic Threads was somewhere between the ages of forty-five and ninety. But most all concurred that the woman was strange, with her odd clothes and almost indifferent demeanor. Today, Mimi was l...

Eleven Minutes in the Sea

Weekly Contest #344

Susie Gordon loved the beach. The soothing sounds and scents of the sea always calmed her, so she considered it one of her favorite places to be. As a matter of fact, she was sitting seaside that very day, relaxing on her comfortable lounge after driving there with her newly acquired license. She reached into a cooler for a juice box when she felt the sudden urge to put her toes in the water. Slowly rising from her tilted chair and shading her pretty blue eyes with one hand, Susie headed towards the foamy swirls nearby. As she approached t...

From Tank to Home

Weekly Contest #342

Hello there! My name is Fibbles; Fibbles the Goldfish - a fancy goldfish - who survived my first life to arrive where I am today. And where is that?, you may ask. We’ll get to that. But do let’s start from the beginning. First, let’s make clear that I am no ordinary goldfish. I’m a Bubble-Eye goldfish which means that I look different from most. My face contains two fluid filled sacks under my eyes that look like cheeks. My swimming is a bit clumsy due to the initial interbreeding the Chinese had to carry out in order to create my species. ...

Water is Thicker than Blood

Weekly Contest #341

*Note: some emotional abuse is hinted at/displayed in this story. Please use your discretion if this is a sensitive topic for you.* Twenty-four-year-old Avery Williams could be described as a lot of things, many of which were positive. She was kind, hardworking, sincere, honest. But Avery’s strongest personality trait didn’t always serve her best interests. Avery was, above all, stubborn. She didn’t - seemingly couldn’t - let things go. Avery liked to call it perseverance as opposed to mere stubbornness. The characteristic was sometimes a ...

Vision of Vigilance

Weekly Contest #340

83-year-old Helen Bradley was sitting at her kitchen table, staring down at what seemed like a massive amount of pills. As happened every day, confusion overcome the portly woman as she tried to decipher which ones she had taken and which she hadn’t. Despite her perplexion, Helen’s medications were arranged neatly and perfectly in order, thanks to her day/night pill cases. She had a good routine going, one that was ensured to stay that way because her nephew George checked in on her every day without fail. Just that very morning, George ha...

Chance

Shelby Montgomery was waiting for her bus when the black rain cloud that had been threatening to break open finally released its wet contents. It was so sudden that, while expecting the rain to happen, Shelby hadn’t been prepared. She struggled with her umbrella now. The handle was resisting her slippery hands, now wet with the falling rain, as she fumbled with the object. It was infuriating and now, here was the bus. Paying her fare and finding a seat, the newly drenched Shelby looked around. The happy couple - also rain soaked - who must’v...

Grandma’s Cookies

Weekly Contest #330

“Excuse me, where can I find the maple syrup?” if you’d told me when I asked that simple question that it would change the course of my entire life, I’d have laughed in your face. But now I can admit you’d have been right. “The maple syrup is on Aisle Five,” the stock boy absently swept back a shock of brown bangs that kept sliding into his eyes. Two seconds later, they were flirting with his line of vision again. “Are you looking for pure from Vermont maple, a flat-out imitation syrup, or a blend of both? We have them all…” “Oh! I absolut...

A Different Type of Hero

Weekly Contest #316

Warren Fitzgerald was only twenty-two years old. He appeared far older, not only due to his mature expressions and somewhat weathered face, but also his extensive vocabulary, unusual confidence and the way he carried himself, in general. His older look actually added to his attractiveness; he seemed to radiate knowledge of a secret to which no one else was privy. His piercing dark eyes and matching hair, neatly coiffed, only added to the effect, He had skipped college (for now), in order to climb the corporate ladder and make his own way. W...

Comeuppance

Weekly Contest #314

It was the hottest day of the year when Al Stanton stepped out of his terracotta suburban ranch home. He wiped the sweat off his brow as he walked toward his car for the approximate twenty minute drive to work. Thank God he’d have air conditioning for this trip. Just the short walk from the front door to the driveway was enough to bathe his heavy set body in sweat, and his synthetic grey suit wasn’t helping. Shit, he thought now. I shouldn’t have given Ann the garage. Ann was Al’s ex-wife who was staying the weekend…and with whom he was actu...

Scott

Weekly Contest #313

It was a lovely spring day when Charity Hunter’s mother asked her to watch her cousin John for the afternoon. Not only was it a chance for Charity to see her younger cousin, it was a great excuse to get herself outside. The sun was shining down from a cloudless, cerulean sky and birds were cheerfully singing their seasonal melodies when little John arrived at the Hunter household. As the two cousins stepped out, the scent of blossoms filled the warm, vernal air. This is a perfect day to go to the park, Charity decided as she took John by th...

A Time to Remember

Weekly Contest #311

Lindy’s Sweet Shoppe was the mom and pop store that had been on Main Street since 1971. One of the magical things about it was that in 2025, it looked almost exactly as it had in the seventies. Pink and white stripes adorned the store in the form of balloons, streamers and wallpaper. One wall had loose candy that could be filled in bags and weighed. Another had rows and rows of chocolate bars. The counter had gum, hard candies and even a few penny candies (although they now cost thirty-five cents). The centerpiece was a table with all the m...

An Exclusive Club

Weekly Contest #310

Content warning: graphic violence, gore, abuse, and mention of non-consensual medical experiments. June 17, 2020 For three long weeks, I’d been waiting for this day - the new writing club I’d been anticipating was finally meeting. My first. Having a true passion for writing, this group sounded so intriguing. For one thing, we couldn’t simply join - we had to be accepted; so not just anyone could belong to this exclusive club. I shivered with delight just thinking about my luck - I still couldn’t quite believe I’d been chosen. Our group was...

The Face of Amy

Weekly Contest #309

June 1977 Twenty-one year old Amy Morgan walked down the produce aisle of the grocery store, the lights reflecting off her long, dark hair. As she was turning over an orange in her hand, a dark-haired man of about twenty-five approached her. “I’m sorry to bother you, Miss” the man began nervously, “but, well…do I know you?” Amy was used to men and their pick up lines, but this one truly exasperated her. She rolled her eyes. “I don’t think so.” She went back to her oranges. But this guy was persistent. “I know what this must sound like. I’...
