Weekly Contest #373
The air conditioner unit rattled the window that held it in place and whined with the raspy hiss of someone on their deathbed, but still it didn’t drown out the talk show on in the other room. My gran needed the tv blaring. It’s a wonder the neighbors never complained. I shoveled another spoon full of cereal into my mouth and scrolled on my phone. “Elijah, be a dear and bring me that bag of Cheetos on the shelf!” “Gran, you know the doctor said you need to watch your salt intake,” I reminded her. There were times I didn’t know who was baby...
Weekly Contest #359
Their sweet, bubbly voices blend into one high pitched, grating sound that numbs my mind. How could he do this to me? Someone fans my train again, and my knees threaten to buckle. What kind of man hurts the woman he loves? The heavy fabric of the dress feels like quicksand pulling me under. My mother gushes, “You make such a beautiful bride, Anna!” “I need a minute,” I wheeze, but I’m certain no one hears me over their musings. Every tick of the old clock on the wall reminds me of another reason why this is a mistake. This isn’t right. The ...
Weekly Contest #356
“Yes, Dad, I understand. As soon as I get back to my apartment, I’ll email Uncle Charlie and get the details.” “What more do you need to know, Annie? It’s an internship with the New York Times, for god sakes,” he says as if it makes all the sense in the world. “You should be grateful to have such an opportunity.” “I’d agree if journalism was my major, but it’s not. It’s—” “I know, I know it’s art conservation, dear,” he interrupts. “Specializing in library conservation,” I clarify. “Everything you need is online now. Libraries are usele...
Weekly Contest #352
No one ever talks about the blue hour. Not like its counterpart, the golden hour, which receives praise for rendering the perfect glow for selfies and family photo shoots. People pay homage to the golden hour, rewarding it with its own hashtag, and quotes in movies and poems, while the blue hour goes unnoticed. The blue hour falls just before sunrise and right after sunset. It casts the world in a deep blue tinge and illuminates it just enough to see everything as it truly appears without the help of the sun’s direct light. I watched him pa...
Weekly Contest #350
You shouldn’t carry that bag, Stella. It’s too heavy for someone your age. Give it to me,” Ella offers with a smirk. “At my age!” I balk at my twin sister. “You’re 3 minutes younger than me! You’re such a silly ass.” “You never miss a chance to remind me that you’re older and wiser,” she counters. The train platform fills with impatient passengers three rows deep. I reposition my cane. It’s been 6 months since my knee replacement surgery and I rarely use it but my husband, Harry, forced me to bring my cane on my trip to Pittsburgh. Ella h...
Weekly Contest #343
“Michael!” I wave over my head. Due to his tall stature, he stands out among the rest on the crowded sidewalk. The lights from the marquee give his gelled back hair a pinkish gleam.“Hi! I hope you weren’t waiting long. The train was delayed.” I explain and stretch my neck with my mouth puckered. He obliges with a light touch of his lips on mine and points to the phone pressed to his ear. He covers the receiver and whispers, “Honey, go put our name in…I’ll be a minute.” “Of course.” I move around him and through the door. The thick smell of...
Shortlisted for Weekly Contest #341 ⭐️
I squeeze my phone against my shoulder and dig in my pocket. Our front desk receptionist whines in my ear. “The donuts and coffee are here for your meeting.” The backpack of the person behind me smacks against my arm as I press my card on the panel. “Thanks, Carol. I’m on my way.” I take my place on the rain soaked platform with my eyes on my phone like the rest of the zombie like passengers. A garbled voice sounds overhead, 'Expect delays up to 10 minutes due to operator shortages on all eastbound rails.' Great. At least it gives me time...
