Tethered

Weekly Contest #379

Dear Diary, I lost it. I actually lost it. The one thing that means the most to me in this world is gone. Could I just get another one? Sure. But it won’t be the same one. It won’t be the one I shared all those memories with, told all those stories to, and spent all those sleepless nights protecting, making sure it wouldn’t go off on its own, or, worse, get stolen. Have I looked for it? Of course, I’ve looked for it. But when nobody understands you, because you don’t speak their language, or because you can’t speak at all, it makes it diffi...

Finger Food

Weekly Contest #378

“Listen up, Skid. After last weekend’s fiasco, we cannot afford for you to screw anything up again, okay?” “I told you to stop calling me that,” Skid says. “And it wasn’t my fault—” “You’re a kid, and you’re a screw-up,” Carlton says. “A screw-up kid. Skid. Get it? And I bet you leave skid marks in your drawers, so it works multiple ways.” “I wasn’t the one who spilled the olive oil,” Skid defends. “I know you’re not suspecting me,” Carlton returns. “And I wasn’t the one who crashed into the bride with a full pot of hot chili.” “I wasn’t the...

Graveyard Games

Weekly Contest #376

“A cemetery is a little cliché, don’t you think?” a voice that sounded not unlike an out-of-tune flute asked. “Excuse me?” “Come on, Uncle Rex,” Hayleigh-Beth continued. “I’ve heard too many scary stories about a cemetery. It’s an overused trope.” “Okay, first of all, you’re like six,” I said. “And second, shut up.” “I’m seven,” Hayleigh-Beth corrected. “And Mommy says we’re not allowed to say that in our house.” “Well, Hayleigh-Beth, do you know what Mommy can do?” “What can mommy—“ “Shut up.” “You’re not a very good Guncle.” “I hate that w...

Mischief in Meadow Park

Weekly Contest #371

“I swear to God, Jack, if you got me out of bed in my bonnet for nothing, I will put a curse on you and all your future children,” said Ciara, adjusting the stray curls back under the shiny dark blue fabric. “I’m not having any kids.” “That’s the curse working already,” she added with a grin. “Yeah, Jack,” Rashan piped in, squeezing his friend's shoulder, his dark skin contrasting against Jack’s pale shoulder under the blue-toned street lamps. “This better not be another one of your big promises that ends in inevitable disappointment.” “I do...

How Did I Get Here?

Weekly Contest #363

*CW: Physical violence, gore, sexual violence. How did I get here? Not just here; under violent pouring rain. Naked. Eyes strain. How did I get here? Not just here; under lamplight in pain. Vulnerable. Blood stains. How did I get here? Wails mixed with the crackling sky. Alone. I cry. How did I get here? To this place? In this state? How did I get here and why? The morning started like every other boring Monday. I slinked my long, pasty-white limbs out from under my green gingham blanket and slipped my naked toes into my brown, fuzzy slipp...

A Perfect Pu'erh

Weekly Contest #362

“I haven’t had coffee for an entire year. I’ve been drinking matcha and pu’erh tea almost exclusively. Pu’erh tea is fermented black tea, so it’s richer and earthier in flavour. Is earthier a word? I don’t know, but if it isn’t, it is now. Anyway, Coffee Pu’erh has unroasted coffee beans in it, so you get the flavour of coffee without the actual caffeine. “In the mornings, I always start with a matcha latte. Usually vanilla flavour, but sometimes I’ll have blueberry or maple, which tastes like pancakes. Or, if I want it cold, I’ll do an iced...

The Castle Under the Stars

Weekly Contest #354

A drop of water pelting my nose wakes me to another monotonous day. Crisp spring air carries notes of last night’s rainfall. If there’s ever a reprieve from the rain, it’s for a brief window in the wee hours of the morning. The hours I usually prefer to spend sleeping. Chirps and caws bounce off brick walls like ping-pong balls. Sunlight beams through the old frosted glass, casting a scene of a bustling world of shadows, colours, and light refraction. My naked toes and my button nose tingle from drafts of cold air. I run warm, so I like to l...

Weekly Contest #346

CW: death, suicidal ideation, cancer, vomit. I hate funerals. I haven’t been to many, but the ones I have been to, well, they didn’t exactly put the fun in funeral. But this one I couldn’t miss. I don’t want anyone to recognize me, so I’m wearing a black baseball cap and tinted glasses, which I understand isn’t respectful dress code for a funeral, but I’m pretty sure the dead guy won’t mind. I wait until the very last second before the service starts to sneak in and discreetly find a spot at the back of the room. Whoever organized the funer...

The 2:37 AM Club

Weekly Contest #345

*This story contains the use of homophobic slurs. The glow of the flickering open sign hanging crooked in the window. The whining creak of the door in harmony with the jingling of a bell as it swings open. Thick air smelling of old cigarettes and even older grease mixed with coffee, bacon, and garlic. The hum of deep fryers and beeping appliances, and the same Garth Brooks CD on repeat through a single broken speaker. This is paradise. At least, at 2:37 AM, after a long night of serving vodka cranberries to wasted twinks and their coked-up ...
