“Can I uh- use the bathroom?” bouncing a closed fist on the cold counter. The attendant locks the glass window, raised eyebrows at my jittery nerves or wearing shades indoors. Loudly she yells to a woman entering with three hampers of dirty clothes. “Linda, your back!” “Unfortunalty.” The attendant reminds me of my grandmother. Short but confident. The type to never turn the cheek. To never back down to save face to themselves. I’ve admired these types of forages, my beloved sister being one of them. Her disappearance cleaved a hole in my he...

Belly Of The Earth

Weekly Contest #358

No one believed me. That was their first mistake. “Price the weather will be fine. I’m not going to say it again.” My boot sticks between two rocks swaying to the side steadying my wavering body on the wall of sandy dirt. My feet ached the backpack hip strap digging into my sides. Zoning in on a plant with succulent tear drop shaped leaves. “Oh look, it’s a portulaca olercea.” Stopping to pick one with my foot stuck, “the leaves, stems, flowers, and seeds are edible.” Jenny and Ryan trudge by. John grumbles. “She’s not even listening.” Again...

In Tales Animals Talk

“Ay, mate, the fisherin’ men got our sunbathin’ spot again,” Leon slowly paddles to Kya and Mac on the shore. The water is ruthlessly cold. The sun is weakly warm. And a group of fishermen hoot in the distance to a lame joke. Now not in yelling distance, he greets in a more friendly manner stepping unto the rocks ambering from side to side, “Heya chums, how’s ya doin’?” “Ah,” Kya sighed, pausing from examining the water clarity, “usually I’d correct your negative thoughts, but there are only a few perfect spots to tan and have our feet in th...

The Long Road Home

People believed in the old days if you sailed far enough you fell over the edge and were swallowed by dragons or engulfed by mermaids. In reality, if you go far enough from a city the high towers turn to flatlands. Light poles dim or disappear altogether. But for Jane and Luna they only made it far enough as a half tank of gas could take them. “You Uncle is going to wonder where his truck is.” Luna said watching Jane count change in the middle console, crusted in old takeout sauce, lint, and dust, to make a full twenty dollars. “By the time...

The Sheep Farm Heist

Far in the rolling hills of Montana sits a ranch. The ranch belongs to the line of Alberson’s. Passed from Herold Alberson to his sons, and their sons for six generations since the mid-eighteen hundreds. The land reaches wide and still, dotted with sheep and wispy clouds, winds carrying the scents of dust, hay, and whatever Mrs. Alberson has baked in the kitchen. Marley, a border collie retired from her years as a sheep herder, now spends her days supervising the newest batch of six-th generation sheep farmers: Johnny, Timmy, Willy, and Cody...

That Smells Off

Weekly Contest #340

I stare at the picture of myself. Brown soft hair framing a round face, clear skin. I seldom take selfies. Or stare in the mirror for that matter. It bothers me, somehow ticking me as self -absorbed. The sun bounces off my image, resulting in an sorbet-orange hue. My eyes drift to the page hastily ripped from an old notebook on my way out the door, relaxing on the console. The list. Three columns of doom. Two uneven lines divide the paper. A grease splotch on the corner from a package of McNuggets that evaded the last car cleaning session. M...
