Apples and Sticks: The Impossible Adventures of Terry and Andelin

Weekly Contest #374

This is undignified, I thought to myself as I traipsed through the Emerald Wood as gracefully as the unkempt wilderness would allow—or rather, as gracefully as you would expect a high-fae of the Great Realms to traverse the vast and unknown wilds. I kicked mud off my once-pristine boot and shook my head with disdain at the caked earth drying on the hem of my ivory robes. Of all the suitable brides in the kingdom, why did mine have to run away the morning of our wedding? As I stumbled along, gnarled stick in my hand, I made my way through the...

Dreams Beneath the Sleeping Moon

Weekly Contest #308

It was a night more lonely and fleeting than any other, filled with the knowledge of ignorance long past and wisdom only a lonely young man possesses. Now I know that I knew nothing then, on that beautiful night too precious to let slip away. And now I can only look back with a painful longing to return to such times, where everything was still new and the summer seemed endless. When I was twenty, I continued to perform at The Gilded Lyre Tavern, and it was where I still laid my head at night. The quaint town of Summersong remained the same,...

Frozen Pizza

Weekly Contest #286

The past week had been a dull blur. Seven days ago, her life was normal; seven days ago she was happy. Then, just like that, she lost the love of her life. He was everything to her, and now she had no idea what she was going to do. She had never felt more lost as she turned the key in the lock and heard the silence-breaking click. Reluctantly, she slowly opened the front door to their home. And it was at that moment she realized that it was just her home now. She stood there at the threshold as the door creaked on its hinges, revealing the d...

What Our Demons Do in the Dark

Weekly Contest #272

Cass and Dean were on their way home after a late night movie. The roads were deserted as they drove through their small sleeping town. It was a pastime of theirs, to joyride in Dean’s old Impala, taking the long way home in the late hours of the night. Dean grabbed Cass’s hand, interlacing his fingers with hers. He lifted it up to his lips and gave it a light kiss before he rested it on her thigh and smiled. Cass returned his warm gaze, and a moment later his eyes flitted past her and he nodded at the old building on the right as he idled b...

The Missing Ingredient

Weekly Contest #270

Watching her granddaughter keep their tradition alive, she couldn’t help but smile. She hoped that the young girl could feel her presence, and that she hadn’t forgotten what her grandmother taught her. A wave of sadness and longing washed over her as she watched her struggle to make the holiday dinner preparations alone. Grandma knew the first year would be the hardest, the first Thanksgiving after she passed. She found herself hoping that she would persist, that the loss would not make her want to give up. She was touched that her granddaug...

Loose Ends

Weekly Contest #268

My eyes adjusted as I stepped into a bright foyer. Everything was glaring white from floor tile to ceiling, and as I walked forward, a white desk appeared. I could hear the faint click of the keys on the white keyboard as a woman typed away behind a white computer, unaware of my approach. I stopped at the desk and cleared my throat. The woman’s eyes snapped up to meet mine in surprise. “Oh, hello,” she said, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose as she smiled. “Didn’t see you there.” “Hi?” I replied, looking around as I said, “Excuse...

Coffee with a Stranger

Weekly Contest #265

Daniel sat at a red light, windshield wipers on full blast as the bottom poured out of the sky. He had a lot on his mind that morning; the gloomy day matched his anxious mood. The day Daniel had been looking forward to was upon him, and he was eager at the prospect of starting a new adventure despite his nervousness. He tried not to think about it as he made his way to his favorite breakfast spot on Kneeland Street. Daniel just graduated last week, top of his class at Harvard. He was accepted for the fall semester at Seattle University for a...

Another Day in Love

Weekly Contest #255

***DISCLAIMER: THIS STORY CONTAINS DRAMATIC, SENSUAL AND TRAGIC ELEMENTS*** Emma stirred to the sound of her alarm at dawn, the sunrise casting a golden glow on the curtains. With a lazy slap of her hand, she hit the off button before rolling over. “Morning, love,” she said, as she reached out. “Morning,” Ian replied as he draped her hand over his chest. Emma hugged him tight and let out a groan. “Can’t we just stay in bed all day?” she mumbled in the darkness, wiggling her toes and touching his feet under the sheets. “I’d love to,” he said...
