Weekly Contest #377
“So what kind of mischief are we getting into tonight, boys?” Jason asked, grinning at the other three high school boys standing at the end of a driveway on a Friday evening. Sam smiled and pulled a key from his pocket. “What does that open?” Danny asked, bouncing excitedly on his feet. “My father’s office building,” Sam responded. His father had gone out of town for the weekend, and Sam snagged the key. “Won’t we get caught?” Forrest asked. “Can’t we hang out at the lake?” Jason rolled his eyes. “We always go to the lake.” Sam punched Forre...
Weekly Contest #364
My hands are gone. And my arms. I feel my shoulders, but they’re like boulders shoved into my neck. It hurts, but I’m not bleeding as far as I can tell. I don’t remember where I am or how I got here, but it is a beautiful place. Lush grass rises to my ankles and tall pines surround me; the sun sends its rays through treetops, basking the area in a dreamlike haze. The air is still, calm, cool. Birds chirp from somewhere in the trees ahead of me, and there is a rustling in the bushes to my left. I’m not alarmed. Quite the opposite. I feel at p...
Weekly Contest #352
“Violet,” I mutter to myself as I walk through the woods. Violet; a person, dimension, thing, creature? I do not know, but the letter with that word had led me here to the abandoned military base south of town. Leaves crunched beneath my feet, my breath smoking away from me, my hands shoved into the pockets of my parka. I shiver as I break through the trees and behold the base. A ten foot tall razor wire fence runs around the complex, which comprises several buildings, guard towers, and abandoned vehicles. I came from the south as instructed...
Weekly Contest #288
Aaron eyed the monstrous mass in the distance, sparks of lighting illuminating the dark cloud's features, followed by the boom of thunder. It would be a while before the storm reached the boat, enough time for him and his wife, Lexi, to reach shore. But would he have enough time? Could he muster his courage and fight back the raging fear in him to talk to Lexi before they were back on solid ground? “Storm’s coming. Maybe we should head back to shore soon.” Lexi appeared from the cabin and stood close to him at the railing on the aft side of ...
Weekly Contest #272
A sound rouses me. A mix of laughter and voices in jovial conversation. The screech of a heavy door sliding across stone and the echo of footsteps on concrete. People have entered. Young people by the sounds of their voices, both boys and girls. I’m not surprised. They often come here seeking a thrill, a scare, a place to be out of the watchful eye of overbearing adults. This is a common occurrence, especially around this time of year. It’s October and Halloween draws close and instead of going to a normal haunted house, teens flock to my ho...
Weekly Contest #149
The town was snuggled peacefully between two small mountains. It contained one road with one stoplight at the center of town with charming brick houses south of the light and to the north, a single gas station and a few essential businesses. The 122 residents lived simple lives, going to their nine-to-five jobs and spending time with their families and neighbors. Nothing happened in this town. It was quiet, with few visitors and even less crime. The people of the town knew each other well and had for generations. Everybody loved the seclusi...
Weekly Contest #131
The party was in full swing when Sandra arrived with two other friends. The two-story house was crammed full of college students, nearly all of them with a red solo cup in their hands, talking loudly over the rave music. The place smelled of spilled alcohol, weed, and body odor. This wasn't Sandra’s typical scene, but she’d just broken up with her three-year boyfriend and her friends insisted on her joining them to “let loose and have fun.” This place didn’t look fun, but she had nothing else to do tonight. She followed her friends through ...
Weekly Contest #105
Three college students made their way along the rocky dirt path that wound in between a dense forest of tower pines. The day started at a nice cool temperature, but now the students panted heavily and consistently wiped the sweat from their eyes. Ellie led a small redhead who had traversed this path many times and hiked often. Behind her, Sam wouldn’t stop talking, and coming up last was Amanda, quiet and lagging behind. They had one more big hill to go before reaching their destination. Ellie checked her watch. Two hours until sunset, whic...
Weekly Contest #90
Tracy opened her eyes. She stared into the blackness at the smooth rock ceiling she knew lay seven feet above where a mound of blankets and pillows were gathered, forming her bed. She sat up, reaching across the darkness to switch on the oil lamp. The flame lit and the cramped room filled with light, casting long shadows across the cave wall and floor, bouncing off the various items cluttered around her sleeping area. Cans of food, mostly expired, were stacked unevenly in a corner. Tracy made her way to the cans, passing by an assortment of ...
Weekly Contest #85
That’s the thing about this city, it’s everything an urbanite could dream of. A sprawling city crawling with diversity of all kinds. The people come from all walks of life, from everywhere in the world, all bustling about the city and heading to their set destinations. Stop and talk to any of them and you will learn something new and hear a new perspective. The people here respect diversity of thought too. Everyone has a voice and everyone can voice opinions without fear of being shouted down or harmed. The buildings are as diverse as the p...
Weekly Contest #79
She had ruined another relationship. Brandon had been with this girl for six months. He really liked Casey, and they recently began to discuss marriage. It had been his longest relationship and by far the healthiest. The best part of his week was spending time with Casey. They fit together and their families seemed to get along well. The relationship had been relatively smooth as they had worked out the issues that arose. That is, until his mom got involved in a situation she didn’t belong in. As they discussed marriage, Casey had voiced so...
