Tethered

Weekly Contest #373

The chair’s wheel squeaks familiarly across the plastic floor mat and the seat releases a sigh as I lower myself into the old cushion and pull up to my keyboard. “Welcome back!” A usually serious voice calls excitedly from my doorframe. My boss. “We’ve missed you,” Johnathan opens. My hand presses into my chest involuntarily as a quick pang strikes. I play it off as a gesture of gratitude. “And I’ve missed you all.” Another twinge of pain, deeper. I suck in a sharp breath and try to release it slowly. “I’m happy to be back,” I say through th...

Two Heads Are Better Than One

Weekly Contest #280

TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE TIME: Early morning. SETTING: Short-term rehabilitation and long-term residency center. SCENE: BOB rolls his wheelchair down the LONG-TERM HALLWAY. As he approaches the nurse’s station, BOB wheels to the desk, secures the brakes on his wheelchair, then leans back. BOB. Top o’ the morning to ya, Danny! Surprised you’re still here. Shouldn’t you have gone home an hour ago? DANIEL. Ha. Wouldn’t that be nice, leaving when I’m scheduled to? What are you up to this morning, Bobby? BOB. No good! (Smacks his knee and ...

A Little Push

Weekly Contest #193

Sebastian walks through the park with his dog every Friday after work. His path typically starts on the west end, closer to his house. He and Cookie will walk for about thirty minutes until they reach the field. If it didn’t rain yesterday, the grass should still be dry enough for him to throw the frisbee for about fifteen minutes. Around that time, Cookie will run out of steam and want to drink from the pond, not the one closest to the frisbee field in the sun, but the cooler one in the shade. If Cookie needs a longer break after getting ...

Weekly Contest #182

Skimming through today’s Featured Filters, I smile, then frown, then purse my lips and blow a kiss into the smart mirror. I spend fifteen minutes tilting my chin and twirling my body, examining the different filters’ effects on all the angles of my face and figure, eventually settling on “Retro Sunrise”, a golden glow that illuminates my skin, smooths my wrinkles and blemishes, extends my lashes, and bleaches the tips of my dark blonde hair to a shimmering ombre sunrise of creamy yellows and soft orange. It is a very conservative look; no bo...

The Void Between the Living and the Dead

Weekly Contest #174

I float in the void between the living and the dead. Between memories and actuality, with no identifiable time, space or purpose. It’s cold, I think, but I cannot feel the shivers as they run up my spine. It’s quiet, I think, deafening maybe, but I don’t hear the usual ringing in my ears. It’s empty here, and isolating, I imagine, but I feel nothing. As I float, or maybe walk, through this abyss, the darkness around me begins to lighten. Growing larger and brighter now, I can make out the familiar white frame of an approaching doorway. I g...

America's Dad

Shortlisted for Weekly Contest #158 ⭐️

(CELEBRITY NEWS TODAY) – Clark Fletcher, "America’s Dad", the beloved American actor best known for his starring role of "Doctor Mason McCarthy" in the decades-long melodrama, The Physician, died last night of natural causes at his home in Hollywood Hills. He was 84. Before his 100-plus film and TV credits, Fletcher began his career as an extra in films back in 1956, when he was only 18 years old. Hollywood producer, James Fillmore, stated in a 1965 New York Times Article, "The other [producers] were sleeping on him, using him as an extra a...

State of the Art State of Mind!

Weekly Contest #155

Manny’s alarm goes off at 5:30am, just like it does every day. He hops up from his bed, brushes his teeth, shaves his face and head, and takes a hot shower, just like he does every day. He opens the closet doors and selects the singular gray coverall jumpsuit, a specifically designed uniform for plastic manufacturers, hanging in the back. He places his used pajamas in the laundry chute, turns towards the door, and reaches for his toolbelt hanging on the hook to complete his uniformed look, but something stops him in his tracks. Not something...

Every Father's Dream

Weekly Contest #154

“Remember,” she whispers into my neck, tightening the clasp on my gravity vest, “We only get one shot at this.” “I know.” “And don’t forget to keep an eye on your watch.” She straps the bulky device to my left wrist and flicks the dial until a neon green date and time hover above my arm. Date: 22nd of May 2056 Time: 23:55 “I know you don’t want to blink or look away for long, but if you aren’t diligently looking at your watch, you might miss your mark. I set the timer to go off in your prime window, but remember, no matter what happens, you ...

The Announcement

Weekly Contest #152

Trigger Warning: Although this story is a work of fiction, it does contain triggering topics such as abortion and fertility issues, please read with compassion and caution. “I can see it now. One more big push, you can do it.” Mrs. Appleton lets out a long groan but doesn’t push. “I can’t,” she says. “I can’t do it anymore.” She falls back on the pillow and her once strained legs go limp, falling to either side of the stirrups. “Come on, Mrs. Appleton. We are so close, one more push and your baby will be here, I promise. Just give me on...

Callused

Weekly Contest #151

My hands ain’t bled since I turned five years old, and my brothers all followed my lead. Bobby’s stopped ‘round six, Colton was ‘bout seven, even Dusty’s hands was hard as a rock by the time he turned eight. But Emma’s hands didn’t callous ‘til she turned eleven. Papa says it’s because Emma’s a girl, and she’s got different obligations than us boys do, but she and I both know her being a girl’s got nothin’ to do with it. See, ‘round here, you don’t get a meal in front of you if you don’t work for it. Age don’t matter and sex don’t matter. A...
