Weekly Contest #375
At 8:17 every morning, Daniel Vale bought a coffee. It wasn't an important coffee. It wasn't particularly good coffee, either. It came from a little shop called Bell & Bean, wedged between a laundromat and a locksmith on Mercer Street. The coffee was too bitter, the cups were too thin, and the barista had the unnerving habit of writing people's names incorrectly despite having known them for years. Daniel went there because it was on his way to work. That was all. Until Tuesday. At 8:17, Daniel walked through the door. The bell above it chim...
The smell of burnt cabbage was always the first sign that Sir Reginald's magical protective amulets were of subpar quality. The second sign was the crow. It wasn't just any crow. It was a massive, glossy bird with eyes that gleamed with an unsettling, malevolent intelligence. It had landed directly on the brim of Reginald's polished steel helmet, its talons scraping against the metal with a sound that set his teeth on edge. Then, with agonizing slowness, it had reached down and plucked a single, pristine white feather from the decorative p...
Weekly Contest #163
Caution: A bit of foul language is used in this story. The silence at the table was deafening and awkward. My brothers and sisters just glanced around at one another, waiting for the banshee to start. Cynnth was doing everything he could to hide his laughter while sneaking looks at me, then at our mother. "No! Absolutely not! Have you gone MAD?" my mother screeched at me, her eyes wide in horror and disbelief. "Nobody's allowed to just leave this family like that, Cedric. Nobody! We built this business and this family around all of us helpi...
I held my phone in my hand, the dial tone echoing through my head. That's it. It's happened. The tears slipped from my eyes before I realized I was crying, and I closed my eyes and just sobbed. It was 5 in the morning, and I was sobbing on a pile of clean clothing I had to fold that day. My ex husband was getting ready for work, and heard me. He walked out of the bathroom cautiously, as he had never seen me cry before. "What's going on?" he asked fearfully. "My mom died," I said to him. I couldn't stop crying, but I didn't know why I was cr...
Weekly Contest #162
It was the meal that would change everything in my life. I remember everything so very clearly, as if it were happening right this very minute. At the time, I thought it was saving my life, I needed sustenance so badly; I needed my thirst to be quenched like nothing I'd ever needed before in my life. Unfortunately, the meal was but a temporary and fleeting happiness, for the sadness and misery it bore lasts a lifetime. I remember my brother seating me at a large, old table. The ornate decorations on it were beautiful, I'm sure, but I was to...
Weekly Contest #67
"What's that drunkard talking about, then?" I asked my mate at the table with me, as we looked over to a pirate in the middle of the room, shouting incoherently and pointing. "I don't know, honestly, something about dragons," Decker replied, squinting at the pirate as if that would somehow clear the noise. I shook my head and tossed back my ale in one chug. I stood and wandered over to the small crowd circled around the loud man. "And you should all come with me, there will be riches galore!" he was shouting at everyone. Looking around, you ...
Weekly Contest #65
The darkness loomed over the town on this all hallow's eve, more so than in previous years. The townsfolk had noticed it seemed darker than usual, but in their enlightened minds, it was simply the waxing and waning of the moon. A "new moon", they called it. Unbeknownst to them, this was the resurrection night - the perfect weather, alignment of the planets and the moon being gone set the stage for the most perfect of supernatural events. The veil between worlds was indeed the thinnest it had been in centuries. One solitary witch knew this, a...
Weekly Contest #64
Today is the day. I begin my new job with the McConell family as their new caretaker. It's been so long since I had a job like this, I was both excited and nervous. Technically, they had posted the ad looking for a governess - whatever that is - and I got the job. I watched the scenery fly by me as I drove to their house. The road curved through a large, dark forest and trees dappled the road with shade. I was enjoying the drive, hoping that my new employment would be just as enjoyable. After cruising along for about 20 minutes, I arrived at...
